Open door policy

John Hay
John Hay

Phraseologism: Open door policy.

Meaning: The policy of the state, which opens its borders for the free import of foreign goods, their competition with domestic producers, as well as for the free entry of people, the exchange of information, ideas, etc.

Origin: The expression is associated with the policy of world powers in relation to the Chinese market for the goods of these countries. In September 1899, United States Secretary of State John Hay sent a circular letter to all American diplomatic missions abroad. It set the task of "keeping the Chinese door open," that is, trying in every possible way to open the Chinese market for imported goods. This immediate interest of Washington was covered up by words about "preserving the integrity" of China, that is, its sovereignty. In March 1901, a collection of diplomatic notes exchanged between the United States and other great powers regarding the "open door policy" in China was published in Washington.

Random phraseology:

How he knew life, how little he lived.

Meaning:

About a smart, subtle (artist, poet, writer) man who lived a short life.

Origin:

From the poem "Poet and Friend" (1827) by Dmitry Vladimirovich Venevitinov (1805-1827). The same line was carved on his gravestone at the cemetery of the Simonov Monastery in Moscow.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Logitech Reach webcam on articulating arm 15.09.2023

Logitech has unveiled an innovative webcam called Reach, featuring an articulating arm that allows you to precisely adjust the camera's position and move it smoothly during video conferencing.

The manufacturer claims that Reach will significantly improve the interactivity of online meetings and will become an indispensable tool for education and streaming.

Reach will be available in two versions: a standard version for placement on a desktop and a clamp-style version that allows you to attach the camera to the edge of a table. Both versions come with a flexible tripod arm, which is similar to those used for microphones and other cameras.

This hand ensures smooth movement of the camera vertically and horizontally, and also allows you to rotate the camera itself. The main features of Reach are its smoothness and stability, which makes it unique among similar devices. Manufacturers claim that such devices typically do not allow the user to quickly and accurately adjust the desired camera position, but Reach will change this practice.

The Reach webcam itself is a Logitech StreamCam model released in 2020, capable of recording 1080p video at 60 frames per second. It is equipped with autofocus and supports 4,3x zoom. If the camera fails, you can replace it with a new StreamCam rather than purchasing a complete kit with bracket.

Logitech Reach will initially be available on the Indiegogo Enterprise crowdfunding platform. According to The Verge, the company has not yet decided on the design-to-price ratio, which could range from $299 to $399 (excluding discounts for crowdfunding participants).
