SAMSUNG SGH-2200 DUAL BAND

When I first held the box with the phone in my hands, I suspected that it was empty, its weight was so small. I remember my first cell phone - from Fora, I think it was a Motorola MicroTac... It probably weighed half a kilo, and the charger even more. Here, the phone itself and everything that comes with it are practically weightless. Yes, progress...

Purely visually, Samsung phones have always made a good impression on me. Despite the lack of clearly round shapes, the body cannot be called angular or clearly square in shape.

The screen size of the SGH-2200 model is not very large, but quite sufficient for convenient work with the phone menu. Five lines (four, not counting the line of icons) of the display allow you to display “in one sitting” almost all the necessary information for the menu section in which you are located.

…Actually, I love devices with hinged lids, but what I immediately didn’t like about this model is that the lid is not quite securely fastened. When I first took the SGH-2200 out of the box, I immediately grabbed the lid (closed) with my fingers and moved it. A free play (play) was discovered, albeit a very small one, that is, the lid moved slightly from side to side. This is not the case, for example, on the Samsung A-100, especially on a completely new one. However, as it turned out later, there was a slight play - due to the fact that the lid snaps off easily - the creators provided the ability to remove the lid. Thus, even if you want to, it is not so easy to break. For example, if the phone falls to the ground, the cover will simply fly off. And, believe me, it won’t be difficult to install it back. By the way, this is a feature of this particular phone model, and not of all Samsung phones.

The buttons are quite comfortable to press, although they are not large. The distance between the keys can be called optimal - it could hardly have been made larger, but if it had been a little smaller, then working with the keyboard would have been inconvenient...

In general, sometimes you can hear people talking about how Samsung phones are not phones at all. Like, the company made refrigerators, and now it’s taken on cell phones, not knowing how to do anything. Even the design is the same square...

I would like to disagree with this statement. Yes, the phones of this company (at least this model) do not shine with any outstanding capabilities (although such a later model as the A-100 can be called an exemplary handset). However, you can’t call them miserable either. Everything about Samsung phones is well thought out and convenient, and the square design has its own charm...

Necessary trifles

The kit, in addition to the phone itself, naturally contained a charger and... headphones with a microphone. Why do I talk about headphones with such emotionality? Because I (we) were lucky - not always a cell phone comes with such a nice thing as an earphone with a microphone (i.e., a headset) - usually you have to buy it separately.

The headphones also came with a small clothespin for fixing the wire on a shirt or sweater, but when I tried to put the wire under a special hook on the clothespin, it became clear that even if I succeeded, it would be impossible to pull the wire out, and it would forever remain inseparable from clothespin. Therefore, I refrained from such a dubious experiment and allowed the wire to dangle freely over my clothes. By the way, nothing bad happened to him during the entire test.

And if the first thing is a charger - it is, as they say, a charger in Africa, then it’s worth dwelling in more detail on headphones with a microphone.

Small pleasures

The earphone is located at the end of a wire so long that it is not necessary to carry the phone with the connected headset on your belt or in your pocket - the length of the cord is even enough to put the phone, for example, on a table, and you can lean back in your chair and, rocking, talk . In general, a long wire.

Not far from the earpiece, a small microphone secured its position; I would even dare to call it a remote control. The button of this small device allows you to perform only two, but the most basic operations, without touching the phone dangling from your belt. This is answering an incoming call and ending the conversation.

When using the headset, interesting properties of the device appear. So, despite the active flip lid, when a headset is connected, the ability of the lid to interrupt the conversation automatically disappears when it is closed. Therefore, after answering a call directly on the phone, you can connect the microphone to the earphone and then safely close the lid - the conversation will not be interrupted. As soon as you remove the headset plug from the phone jack, the cover becomes active again.

Another nice little thing is a sound signal when connecting a headset. So, when you insert the plug, a signal that the headset is ready for use is sent to the earpiece; when you remove the plug, a signal is issued by the phone speaker. Therefore, if the wire suddenly becomes disconnected from the phone, its speaker will immediately report this. However, there is a high probability that you will not hear this signal - after all, the headset is designed to be used when there is no way to hear the ringing signal from the phone itself.

Now about the cons. The first is not the most comfortable earphone. It is quite large, and therefore staying in the ear for a long time is quite unpleasant.

The second disadvantage, more serious, is the sound quality. All my interlocutors noted that when talking through the headset microphone, the sound quality is an order of magnitude lower than when talking directly through the telephone microphone.

And finally, minus the third. The phone ringing is not in your ear. And in a noisy place, as usual, you will never know that they are calling you. There is only one thing left - after connecting the headset, do not forget to switch the phone to vibration mode...

What's on our menu? or Samsung capabilities as they are...

So, we finally come to the main part of the test - working with the menu. The SIM card is inserted (without it you will not get to the menu), the PIN code is entered...

A greeting appears on the screen, which, by the way, you can write yourself - to do this, you need to enter the “phone settings” section of the menu and select the “greeting” subsection, replace the standard “Samsung SGH-2200 DualBand” with something like “Hello!!! My name is Gleb!" or “A eto exactly your telefon?!”…

In general, working with the menu seemed more convenient than ever to me. The button below the screen on the right allows you to move down through the menu, and the button on the left performs the “select” action. The "C" button allows you to return to a higher level. Two connected buttons on the side of the phone, which allow you to adjust the volume during a call, also act as a cursor when working in the menus - they move up and down through the menus. However, these buttons are not very convenient to press, and therefore I only occasionally pressed the “up menu” button when I scrolled through the desired line with the “down” button under the phone display.

I was pleasantly surprised by the list of languages that the phone can switch to - there are eighteen of them, although there are some completely wild languages spoken in some Zimbabia...

I also liked the fact that when performing various more or less important operations, for example, when entering a number into your address book, the phone asks you to confirm the operation three times. It's almost impossible to make a mistake. Although, of course, sometimes such a lengthy process does not lead to delight, and some even consider it a disadvantage, but I liked the phone’s care for the stored information.

Another convenient feature of the menu is the ability to directly access phone settings. So, each menu item is assigned its own number. It consists of two or three digits. And if you remember the number of the function that you need, then you can call it directly by pressing the "menu" key and the numbers corresponding to your function. For example, in order to call up the “call list” parameter, and in it “recent missed calls”, you need to press “menu”, 2, 3. Done.

Among other features, it is worth noting various call notification options. There are four of them - sound, vibration, light, and combined - sound plus vibration modes. However, the latter has a small drawback - it does not give two signals simultaneously, as it can do (when you select this mode in the menu and press the "OK" button, the phone in demo mode rings and vibrates at the same time), but first gives a couple of signals in vibration mode, and only then starts calling... This cycle (vibration - ringing) is repeated until you answer or until the person on the other end of the line gets tired of waiting ;-)

The SGH-2200 has four alarms (although they beep very ugly), when turned on (or at least one) a special icon appears on the phone’s display. When the phone is in silent mode, the signal is still sent, albeit in the form of vibration. For each signal, you can set a reminder - your own message, which is displayed at the appointed time. It is also possible to find out the world time - there are 22 cities on the list.

It is impossible not to mention such a section of the menu as “network services”. Thanks to the functions of this part of the menu, you can, in particular, forward incoming calls coming to your handset. So, you can set up call forwarding in such a way that while you are already speaking, new calls do not come to you, but are forwarded to another number. Or, for example, if you are already at home, so that all incoming calls go to your home telephone.

The biggest drawback of the menu, in my opinion, is the lack of a calculator on the phone. Sometimes you urgently need to calculate something, at least, for example, how many native tugriks are left in your account, and your hand reaches for the phone. And there, as they say, a bummer... However, as I was told in one cell phone store, Samsung's policy implies that the phone should only be used for calls. Therefore, the Samsung SGH-2200 does not have a calculator, a WAP browser, or any other additional functions. You shouldn’t turn your phone into an organizer and a universal work tool. There is a computer for the Internet, a calculator for various calculations...

Conversation

Now you can start talking directly on our phone. The process of dialing a number is no different from the usual one. We dialed the number, pressed the “call” button, talked, pressed the “hang up” button. It’s a pity that 2200 doesn’t cut itself off when the other end of the line...er...that is, the line, hangs up.

In this way, the phone could save its owner time and money.

In order to access long-distance - international calls, you can use the "+" function. You simply hold down the "0" key until the "+" icon appears on the screen, and then make a normal call.

Interesting point. When you start dialing a number, the display size is two lines and holds nine characters each. However, if there is not enough space, the font size is reduced and the display switches to a three-line mode with 12 characters on each line.

My case, specially purchased for testing this device, was quite bad, and it was assumed that the device was inserted into it openly, and then the lid was closed over the case. But I was scared to leave the cover unprotected - it could be scratched, or even broken off :( by those around me. Therefore, I put the phone in the case already closed. And in order to answer the call, I had to open the case, take out the phone, flip the cover, press the button “answer” and only after that say your “hello!”...

It turned out that it could be done much simpler. If the phone is closed and there is a call at that moment, just press the volume button located on the side of the phone and you can talk! With the lid closed!

In addition, when talking with the lid closed, an interesting feature of the phone appears. As soon as the other end of the line hangs up, the SGH-2200 also stops working in talk mode. And this despite the fact that during a conversation with the lid open, in order to “hang up” the phone, you have to press the corresponding button... Or close the lid.

The top volume button can also (with the lid closed, of course) turn the phone's silent mode (vibration mode) on and off. In this case, the message “silent” appears in the lower right corner of the device’s display.

Now, even when you open your phone, you won’t get a single sound out of your phone. All buttons are pressed absolutely silently, and even the lid slams shut as if more quietly... :)

The Samsung SGH-2200 also has a missed call recording function. So, if they called you and you did not answer, the message “1 missed call” will constantly appear on the device’s display. Or more if you are completely deaf or took a long time to wash in the bathroom... At the same time, as soon as you open the phone cover, it will independently enter the desired section of the menu, that is, the “list of missed calls”, and you just have to see who called you ( “name”), from which number (or, if undecided, the message “no number” is displayed) and at what time. The phone remembers up to ten missed calls. And the last ten received calls and the last ten dialed numbers.

The SGH-2200 has a display backlight - a very pleasant, unobtrusive green color. The backlight time can be adjusted - it can be either “long” or “short”. The difference is that with long backlight, the light goes out ten seconds after you last pressed any key. And with a short duration, the backlight turns off ten seconds after you pressed the button for the first time or opened the phone cover.

The backlight can be turned off altogether, then you will achieve a slight increase in battery life.

During a conversation, the word “parameters” (parameters) appears on the phone display above one of the menu keys. By pressing it, without interrupting the conversation, of course, you enter the so-called incoming calls menu. Here you can, for example, turn off the phone microphone so that your interlocutor does not hear you (if you want to say something to the person standing next to you). True, this procedure takes some time, and it’s easier to just cover the microphone with your hand the old fashioned way. And if you turn it off, the most important thing is not to forget to turn it back on later!..

Also, during a conversation, you can calmly rummage through your address book, read or write SMS messages, and... take a second call, for example. The first call will be automatically put on hold.

It is also possible to call during a conversation. To do this, select “hold” in the parameters. Now the first call is on hold, you can dial another number. And then, if necessary, connect everyone - and please, the conference call is ready...

Of course, you can enjoy all these functions only if this service is supported by the operator...

This way you can connect up to five participants to the conference. If you need to say something to someone confidentially, then there is a “private” function - by selecting the interlocutor and pressing this button, you will talk only to him, and the others will not hear you, while remaining in touch... Also, talking to two interlocutors, you can connect them to each other with the “transfer” button, while you are disconnected from the conversation...

Of course, you should not forget that you will only be able to use these functions (conference calling, call hold...) if these services are supported by the network operator and you have ordered them in advance...

After the conversation, you can view the duration and cost of the call. However, if there were no problems with viewing the duration of the conversation, I still couldn’t cope with calculating the cost. And do not try to configure this parameter - it is not supported by GSM operators. Bye.

Plus

Now let's talk a little about the undocumented capabilities of the Samsung SGH-2200.

To begin with, you can change the display contrast if you wish. To do this, type the following line on your phone keypad: *# 0523 #

You can now make the display background darker or the displayed numbers lighter.

You can also view your phone's software version. To do this, dial: *# 9999 # or *# 0837 #

If you want to know what IMEI code is installed on your device, dial *# 06 #

By the way, quite by accident I came across the function of listening to the installed melody. To do this, dial *# 0289 #

If you know any other hidden feature of this device, send it to me, and we will definitely insert it into the article.

It's time to take stock

The Samsung SGH-2200 cell phone is first and foremost a telephone. It is not adapted to perform any auxiliary functions - an organizer or an assistant in general. It has a simple, not indulgent, but thoughtful and convenient menu that is easy to navigate. Everything you need to make calls is here. No more. Of course, it should be understood that the phrase “simple phone” should not mean a phone that can’t do anything. Until recently, the Siemens C25 was considered a simple phone, but as time goes on, the demands on phones are growing, even among those who only need a mobile phone to make calls. And if yesterday “no bells and whistles” meant that the phone had practically nothing, today phones of the same category can do much more.

In terms of size, the SGH-2200 is, in my opinion, the optimal phone. Not very big and heavy, but not so small that it's awkward to use.

This model is a simplified version of the company's other models from the SGH series. Look at the SGH-2100 for example. It has a voice recorder, voice dialing and much more. This means that Samsung knows how to make cell phones. He can and does it.

And the SGH-2200 is a phone intended for people who are fairly wealthy, but do not require any gigantic capabilities from their new phone. This device is more expensive, beautiful, lightweight and a little more functional analogue of such phones as Siemens C25, Ericsson T10 and similar devices.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Tonometer works by touch 01.12.2012

Engineers at Nihon University (Japan) have invented a blood pressure monitor that measures blood pressure by simply touching a finger on the sensor. This means that to take readings from the device, you do not need to put on a cuff, pump air into it, and then release it and listen to characteristic noises through a stethoscope. The device was demonstrated at Medica 2012 in Düsseldorf (Germany).

To measure blood pressure, a person simply needs to touch the touch area on the device, it resembles a regular button. LEDs and photodiodes are built into this block, the light is reflected from the surface of the finger, hits the sensors, and the data is quickly analyzed. The developers did not give details on the principles of operation of the electronic tonometer, they only mentioned that the technology is based on the phase shift method.

The same technology is based on another prototype presented by the same team of engineers, it acts as a breast cancer detector. If there is a tumor, then the color of the tissue in its place is somewhat different from the color of the tissues around. As a result, both areas absorb and reflect incident light differently, and a provisional diagnosis can be made.
