PHILIPS XENIUM 989. Mobile phone review Review Philips Xenium 989 looks like a very stylish device. Some people like me might not like the new rectangular shape (compared to the Philips Ozeo), but the Philips designers probably thought it would look more modern this way. Everything else is pretty good. Modern colors (silver, gold, gray and black), large display, small in size (109x41x20 mm), very light (75g) and fits comfortably in the hand phone. It might even be better to say "telephone", since it really looks like a small toy and the word "telephone" is very cumbersome for him. Compared to the Philips Ozeo, the device is 6mm shorter, 7mm narrower and 33g lighter. The buttons, as they were, are plastic, quite comfortable. In light models, they are slightly darker than the case, and in dark ones they are contrastingly light. Also, an LED indicator has been added on the top of the front panel, which indicates registration on the network, warns of receiving a call, low battery. The disadvantages include a rather large length of the antenna. It would be better if it was a little smaller. Despite minor shortcomings, with the new design Philips Xenium 989 is sure to be a successful addition to any style of clothing, both business and sporty. Although Philips has gone further. She, together with Levi Strauss and designer Massimo Osti, developed a special collection of electronic clothing (Levi's® ICD + ™), including 3 jackets and a vest. The manufacturers have already built in an mp3 player, a Philips Xenium 989 phone, speakers, a microphone and a display. All models are made of high-tech materials that are not afraid of any weather conditions. According to the developers, "this modern workwear" is designed for people leading a certain lifestyle, "it is designed for couriers, as well as professionals in the field of cinema and the Internet." In Russia, all these innovations are not yet sold, but in Europe they can already be found in quite a few places (Harrod's stores and others). The cost of such twists fluctuates around 600-900 dollars, but their number is not large. Battery, charger, instruction The battery in my package was a powerful lithium-ion battery (900 mAh), which at the same time was the back cover of the phone. The battery provides about 3-6 hours of talk time and up to 500 hours (? 20 days) of standby time. With intensive use without turning off the device for the night, the battery can be safely not recharged for about 5-7 days, which was extremely pleasing. Thanks to these features, the device is very convenient to take with you on short trips, there is no need to carry a charger with you. The peculiarities of this phone is that the vibrating call is built right into the battery, which is more of a minus than a plus. Without a battery (Vibra), this function simply will not work in the phone. In fairness, it should be noted that other manufacturers prefer to build a vibrating alert into the battery. The charger that is used here is with automatic voltage selection from 90 to 240V. The plug has a button, when pressed, the charger is tightly fixed in the grooves of the phone. When plugged into a power outlet, the green light on the charger starts flashing. You can immediately see if it's charging or not. The instruction is detailed, sensible and in Russian. When I saw her, I was amazed at her size. It is twice as long as a phone. It reminded me more of the instructions from the TV than from the phone. But that’s the way it is… Включение A SIM card was inserted into the device before switching on. SIM-holder - plastic, but with a metal clip that securely fixes the card. Then the battery was inserted and finally the "Enable" button was pressed. The blue backlight turned on and Philips Xenium appeared on the screen. Registration on the network required a significant amount of time. Loading the notebook took about 20 seconds. The welcome inscription has not been edited in any way. Next, the screen showed the name of the network, a nice analog clock - Philips brand name, date, signal indicator (4 levels) and battery charge (4 levels). You can make the display still show the cellular index, but then the analog clock disappears. Only a small digital clock next to the date is displayed. High contrast graphic display. Large in size, allows you to display up to 6 lines (5 lines of text + one line of icons). However, there is no dynamic change of fonts. Instead, there is a "Zoom" feature that simply increases or decreases the size of the text used in the menu. With the zoom turned on, the menu looks more attractive. The backlight, as already mentioned, is blue, very pleasant. The backlight time can be changed. You can turn it off altogether, you can turn it on for 10 seconds, for 30 and for a minute. You can also change the contrast, 5 levels are available - from the lightest to the sharpest. Manage your phone As with all new Philips handsets, the Philips Xenium 989 has a carousel based menu that provides quick access to its many features. The carousel is a ring of icons moving across the screen that provide access to various menu and submenu items. All submenus, in turn, are built in the form of a ring. The menu is controlled with one thumb by pressing the wheel button (Pilot-key) located on the side panel of the phone. Moreover, you can press in three ways: moving the wheel up, down and just pressing it. Thus, the movement of the wheel leads to movement through the menu, and when it is pressed, the selected item is activated. The menu itself is accessed by pressing the button. You can exit to the previous menu level either by long pressing on the Pilot-key, or on the cancel button - "C". This way of organizing the menu may be convenient, but it is clearly designed for an amateur. You get used to it for a very long time. I still somehow liked the more traditional way of managing. Then I didn’t really like the Pilot-key button itself. If you twist it for a long time, then unpleasant sensations remain on the finger, of course, not corns, but close to that ... But there is another way to control the phone, using voice dialing. Pre-program the desired commands (up to 10 out of 25 possible), you can access each of them by long pressing the Pilot-key. You can also dial pre-recorded phone numbers using your voice. The voice dialing function is implemented very well, the quality of word recognition is high. The speed dialing function (one-touch) works in the same way. Buttons 2-9 can be reserved either for some functions or for phone numbers. In general, the phone is designed to reduce the number of button presses to a minimum and at the same time provide access to the maximum number of functions. You can appreciate this ability of the phone in cold weather, it is also very useful for motorists, who now practically do not need to take their eyes off the steering wheel to turn on one or another menu function. All menus are Russified. Russification is done quite well, there was no doubt about what is what. All signatures are made in normal Russian and in a pleasant font. Melodies There are not many melodies to choose from, only 19 pieces. You can choose any of your choice. Some melodies are peculiar enough, so there is a chance to distinguish your call from many others. If you want to completely stand out from the crowd, you can turn into a composer for a short time and use the "own melody" option to compose your own call from a maximum of 66 notes. You can change both the notes themselves and their duration. When composing a melody, a musical staff is displayed on the screen, on which all newly entered notes appear. It is immediately clear what kind of melody you wrote. The ringer volume level can be changed from silent to loud, in addition, it can be increased. If you set the volume to maximum, then the call is heard well. Your phone also has features that allow you to turn on or off the button tone, low battery tone, SMS message tone, and reminder tone. The last two, in my opinion, are not very loud when compared, say, with the volume of a call or an alarm clock. When I used the phone, I constantly missed the received messages, I found out about them purely by chance when I took the device in my hands to make a call. It is impossible to change these signals to any others. There is also a “minute” signal here, which should be emitted 15 seconds before the end of each minute of communication, but in my device it was somehow very selective, during some conversations it was, and during some he did not want to warn me about the end of the minute. The signal itself is very short and quiet. If you get carried away with the conversation, then you may not notice it at all. But the vibrating alert works just fine. I felt it even through a sheepskin coat and even when I put the phone in a backpack in the pocket farthest from me. To some extent, this is a real call, as you not only feel it, but also hear it. As in many other devices, Philips Xenium 989 has the ability to set certain types of profiles, i.e. a set of settings that can be selected with one touch. There are 5 such profiles - Personal, Silent, Offline (maximum battery saving), Outdoor and Meeting. This feature increases user comfort and also reduces the number of unnecessary actions. Phone book The memory of the phone book in this model is limited by the size of the memory of the SIM card. But by and large this is enough, and more memory is simply not required. You can get to the "Names" either by scrolling the Pilot-key down, or through the menu by double-clicking on the Pilot-key. To save the user's time, there is a search system by name. To do this, you just need to press the button with the first letter you need, and you will automatically find yourself on the line where the names begin with this letter. You can also view the List of Names, add a name to the List during a call. Eliminates the need for a pen and other writing utensils. Also, access to certain phone numbers, as already mentioned, can be obtained using voice dialing (up to 10) and hot keys or speed dialing keys (up to 8). The call list in this model stores the last 30 numbers. Moreover, the list here is one general, it is not divided into a list of outgoing, incoming or missed calls, which is not very convenient. You can find out what kind of call it was, incoming or outgoing, only by the direction of the small tube at the end of the line of the phone number or the name of the subscriber. Working with SMS messages At first glance, working with SMS messages seems quite ordinary. As in many other phone models, there is T9 predictive typing that works in the main European languages (Russian, of course, does not count), there are message blanks in English, which, however, are more than usual here (10 pieces), it is possible to insert graphics. But this graphic is very unusual. Each picture is a small icon. The number of such icons stored in the phone's memory is quite large, there are about 50 different options. All icons can be conditionally divided into the following groups: emotion icons (smile, wink, kiss, hug, etc.), animal icons (bear, monkey, fish, etc.), event icons (party, shopping, lunch, etc.) and sports icons (ball, golf, victory, etc.). Unfortunately, only owners of compatible Philips phones will be able to see them. On other phones, the corresponding code will simply be displayed, which is far from always and not clear to everyone. And it's a shame, because when you add such an icon, the sent message immediately comes to life. Among the shortcomings of working with SMS, it can be noted that it is impossible to delete the entire list of messages here, and also that if there is not enough memory, the messages themselves are not erased, you have to do everything manually. Other useful features Your phone has several call counters and timers to help you manage your calls in the most efficient way. So, there is a timer that shows the total time of all calls, or rather, the total time of outgoing and separately incoming calls, there is a timer that shows the time of the last call. Accordingly, there is a counter for the total cost of calls, there is a function that allows you to set a cost limit. At the end of a call, both the time of the last call and its cost can be displayed (cost calculation must be supported by the operator). The phone also has a modem that transmits data at a speed of 9600 bps, a calculator, average in terms of convenience, an alarm clock and an organizer. The alarm clock can be set so that it rings not only once on the set day and time, but, say, every day at this time, or every day, excluding weekends. This again reduces the number of necessary operations. Now you do not need not only to set an alarm every day, but even to think about it. However, the "Snooze" function is not included in this alarm clock. The organizer allows you to work with a maximum of 40 events. For convenience, it is divided into several sections: "Meeting", "What to do", "Quick setup" (selecting the time and date of the profile you need), "Vacation". The event can be repeated daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. In the "Meeting" and "What to do" sections, you can set the reminder time: at the beginning of the event, 5 minutes before it, 10 minutes before, an hour, a day, a week, you can not set it at all. In the organizer's weekly calendar, the days for which you have events scheduled will be marked with a special symbol. A voice recorder for 20 seconds could also be a very useful function. "Could", because, it seems to me that you can use it as efficiently as possible during a conversation, but you can't turn it on at this moment. If anyone knows how, do not keep it a secret, please tell. Another of the additional functions, I don’t know how useful, we can note the game of bricks. She is here alone. Its meaning is to break a complete set of bricks with a ball and racket. Sensitivity and call quality As for the sensitivity of the device, it is quite satisfactory. The signal also reached places with poor reception. No communication failures or spontaneous shutdowns of the device were observed. The connection quality is worse, but it is also quite at a decent level. Some noise and crackling was sometimes heard in the speaker, and sometimes an echo. There was no deterioration in reception in the car. There was no difference in the quality of communication, whether you were in motion or in a more or less stationary position. During a call, you can mute or unmute the microphone, adjust the speaker volume, write down the number in a notepad, etc. Overall… I liked the phone. In short, Philips Xenium 989 is a small, light, stylish device that can last a week without recharging and is easy to manage. He has good sensitivity, a wonderful vibrating alert. Everything that is provided by the developers in it works and pretty well. Another thing is that not much is provided for in it. It seemed to me that even though the phone is positioned as a business-class device, it falls short of it in some respects. There is no WAP-browser, no infrared port, no stopwatch, no currency converter. Author: Maria Sennikova See other articles Section Mobile Legends. Read and write useful comments on this article.
