Series production of HBM2E memory

SK hynix has announced the start of full-scale mass production of high-speed DRAM memory or HBM2E.

With a 1024-bit bus running at 3,6 Gb/s per lane, HBM2E memory delivers 460 GB/s of bandwidth, outperforming HBM2 memory by 50%.

An HBM2E stack can have up to eight 16Gb dies connected using TSV (Through Silicon Via) technology, so that the maximum memory capacity reaches 16GB. This is twice as much as in the case of HBM2 memory.

According to SK Hynix, HBM2E is the "optimum solution" for next-generation AI memory systems, deep learning accelerators and supercomputers. It is expected that it will find application in an exascale supercomputer, which will be able to take fundamental and applied scientific research to a new level.

Genetically modified maggots heal wounds 19.05.2016

Scientists at the University of North Carolina once again remembered the old method of treating wounds. They genetically modified the larvae to clean human wounds and secrete a reagent that accelerates healing.

In the past, doctors used carrion green fly larvae as a treatment tool. The larvae ate the dead tissue and left the living tissue, moreover, they secreted antimicrobial substances that kept the wound clean. In general, the method was cheap and effective, but not fast. Clinical trials have shown that maggots do not speed up wound healing, but new genetically engineered creatures could change that.

Human platelet growth factor is a signaling molecule that causes cells to divide rapidly. Also, as experiments have shown, it helps wounds heal. Researchers have already used insects to produce growth factor, but the technique has never been used on fly larvae. Biologists from North Carolina made two "batches" of larvae. One was modified to produce a factor when heated to 37 degrees Celsius. The other produced the necessary substance if she followed a diet that did not include the antibiotic tetracycline.

The heated larvae really began to produce a growth factor, but they never isolated it from their bodies, but a group of larvae purified from tetracycline abundantly excreted the required substance in body secretion and waste products. Although the larvae have not yet been tested on human wounds, the researchers believe that these insects will both clean wounds and heal them, greatly reducing the time it takes for flesh to heal.

Such a remedy will especially help people with diabetes who have non-healing ulcers on their legs. Although the thought of worms poking around in open wounds is unpleasant, but if they halve the healing time, then the remedy will be popular.
