NOKIA 7160

The standard package includes: the Nokia 7160 itself, a 900 mAh lithium-ion battery (BLS-2S), a charger (ACP-7U), a DLR-3P cable (for communication with a PC via a 9-pin COM port), earpiece with microphone (HDC-9P), software CD, phone user manual, instructions for connecting to a PC and a whole bunch of various brochures, visual posters for operation, etc.

It should be noted that this model is produced for the US market, so the charger is designed for a voltage of 110V, and all documentation is in English.

phone design

Externally, the phone differs from its GSM-colleague only in black (warm black) body color and the absence of a back button for quick opening of the slider using a spring mechanism. Probably, frequent breakdowns of the mechanism forced the manufacturer to abandon this design.

At first, opening the slider with one hand is quite difficult, but after a week you get used to it. The phone's screen and roller frame is made of titanium alloy, which prevents scuffs, as happens with the Nokia 3210 after some time of operation.

Switching on the phone and call quality

The AMPS/DAMPS standard does not use SIM cards, so the phone is connected by the operator of the cellular company by entering a code containing the operator's number into the phone and entering the ESN code of the phone itself into the operator's database (the process is called pairing). Thus, up to three different numbers (NAM) can be registered in the phone and switched between them through the phone menu, however, only the currently selected number will work.

When you turn on the phone, instead of the usual logo with a symbolic handshake, it shows a spectacular animated screensaver "NOKIA Connecting People", which can be replaced by a welcome line in one of 6 built-in languages, including Russian.

Registration on the network is fast, but I was surprised that the name of the mobile operator (alphatag) is not displayed on the screen, instead it says "I have my own network" or "Roaming" - in case of trying to register in someone else's network. Perhaps, when programming the phone, the operator of the cellular company simply did not enter the necessary information responsible for automatically recognizing the name of the cellular operator.

The screen displays 7 divisions of the signal level and battery charge, time and inscriptions Menu and Names. When registering to the DAMPS network, the display indicates operation in digital mode with a D icon - its absence means connected to the AMPS network.

Nokia 7160 works on TDMA 800 (DAMPS, IS136), TDMA 1900 (PCS) and AMPS networks. It should be noted that the analog block in modern Nokia digital models is rather weak, and this has a negative effect when working in mixed AMPS / DAMPS networks: when the phone is switched from analog to digital signal (and vice versa), the device becomes temporarily unavailable for incoming calls.

The sensitivity of this model is noticeably higher than Nokia's DAMPS models (6120, 6160, 8860, 8260), but in terms of the quality of work in AMPS networks, it is slightly inferior to Nokia 252, 282 and Motorola analog phones. Outside the city, in the presence of a digital (DAMPS) signal, the phone keeps the network perfectly, in areas with uncertain analog (AMPS) reception, the Nokia 7160 often misses incoming calls, but it allows you to make calls up to a complete loss of signal.

The sound quality is very good. Affects the successful location of the microphone on the slider, which is at the time of the conversation just against the mouth, and the AMPS / DAMPS technology itself provides a very natural and clear sound.

Battery

Claimed battery life from a standard lithium-ion 900 mAh battery is up to 2,5 hours of talk time and up to 50 hours of standby time in the analog network and up to 4,5 hours of talk time and up to 10 days of standby time in the digital network. With an average number of calls (up to 15-20 minutes a day) in a mixed AMPS / DAMPS network, the phone lasted more than three days without turning it off at night.

A lot of energy is spent on re-registration in the AMPS / DAMPS system, which occurs much more often than in GSM networks.

Menus and settings

The phone book is completely identical to Nokia 7110, the menu is slightly different: the DAMPS model does not have the "SIM services" item, but there is the "To do" item, which serves to create a list of scheduled tasks and set their priority.

The presence of voice dialing for 10 numbers in Nokia 7160 is also a characteristic difference from the GSM model.

The voice dialing function works flawlessly even in noisy areas, it is very convenient to use it through the Handsfree device (earphone with microphone), while there is no need to take out the phone itself.

The disadvantages include the lack of a built-in vibrating alert - to implement this function, you should purchase a special vibrating battery. I dare to suggest that this is a special marketing ploy of the American division of Nokia, undertaken to artificially increase the demand for the BMS-2V nickel-metal hydride vibrating battery.

The call of this device is a bit louder and clearer than that of the Nokia 61xx series, although this may be my subjective impression.

The Nokia 7160 offers a choice of 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Hebrew. For the first four languages, support for the T9 dictionary has been implemented.

Russification was carried out very competently, the abbreviations used do not raise questions.

Working with SMS and WAP

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to test the phone with SMS and WAP, because. my carrier does not support these services. When voice messages arrive, a symbolic ribbon icon appears on the screen, and the number of messages in the operator's voice box is also indicated. Voice messages are accessed via the speed dialing function using key 1.

PC connection

As mentioned above, the standard package includes a DLR-3P cable for communication with a PC and a CD with software, as well as a separate guide for connecting the Nokia 7160 to a computer.

When connecting the phone to a PC with Windows 2000 installed via cable, the system identified it as "Nokia 7160 Data Fax PnP via Cable" and installed the suggested drivers from the CD.

The maximum data transfer rate in AMPS / DAMPS networks is 9,6K, the phone keeps communication confidently, which allows you to use the Internet, download e-mail or send a fax while traveling.

Nokia FoneSync 4.0 allows you to synchronize your phone's phone book with the calendar data of such programs as: Microsoft Outlook, Symantec ACT! and Lotus Organizer.

The connection via infrared port with the laptop went smoothly, after installing the drivers the phone appeared in the list of modems as "Nokia 7160 IR on Virtual COM4".

We also connected Nokia 7160 to an HP Jornada 548 PDA with Windows CE 3.0 via the infrared port. In a Windows CE environment, no driver installation is required, just configure the port and connection settings.

Accessories

Almost all accessories from Nokia 7160xx and 51xx models are suitable for Nokia 61. However, I did not manage to find a case from which you do not need to pull out the phone for a conversation.

To compensate for the absence of a vibrating alert, I recommend purchasing a vibrating battery. Nokia only offers the BMS-2V nickel-metal hydride vibration battery, while a wide range of lithium-ion batteries can be found from third-party manufacturers.

Impressions

A handy device that has almost all the functions of modern mobile phones.

Pros:

  • the most advanced model in its standard;
  • voice dialing;
  • IR port;
  • Russian language support;
  • cable and earphone included.

Cons:

  • no built-in vibrating alert;
  • high price.

Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Reducing the negative effects of television on the brain 15.01.2024

Houston Methodist Hospital neurologist Randall Wright shared techniques for reducing the negative effects of television on the brain. The doctor emphasizes that the brain actively reacts to the environment, and long-term sitting in front of the TV can create unfavorable conditions for its work. Practical recommendations are offered to reduce negative consequences, including walking before viewing and time management.

Wright compares the pleasure of watching TV to gambling, noting that it can cause negative changes. It offers time management techniques, such as setting an alarm, so you don't lose your sense of reality while watching. Recent research also highlights that exercise promotes neurogenesis - the formation of new cells and connections in the brain.

According to recent studies, prolonged exposure to television for more than 6 hours can cause depression due to limited communication with others. Maintaining balance is important. Men often watch football matches with friends while eating unhealthy snacks. The recommendation is to make healthy choices including fruits, vegetables, hummus and soybeans.

The scientist calls for a balance between screen time and physical activity, highlighting that excessive TV viewing without social activity can lead to depression. Wright advises making healthy choices through physical activity and proper nutrition, especially when binge-watching with friends.

The methods Randall Wright suggests can help reduce the harmful effects of television on the brain, emphasizing the importance of taking care of the nervous system for overall well-being.
