Carbon 3D frame will improve lithium-ion battery anodes

29.07.2021

With the goal of eliminating the shortcomings of current lithium-ion battery anodes, a group of engineers from Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Busan National University, in an article for the Chemical Engineering Journal, reported on an anode material they developed with unique structural characteristics that overcome many of the existing barriers to increase anode efficiency.

In their work, the Korean scientists focused on manganese selenide (MnSe), a widely available transition metal compound known for its high electrical conductivity and used in the development of semiconductors and supercapacitors. However, MnSe experiences a sharp (nearly 160%) volume change during charge-discharge, which not only reduces electrode performance but also creates safety issues.

The researchers developed a simple and inexpensive way to compensate for this volume change: they evenly embedded MnSe nanoparticles into a three-dimensional porous carbon nanosheet (3DCNM) matrix. This carbon framework not only protected the fixed MnSe nanoparticles from sudden volume expansion, but also endowed them with numerous additional advantages, such as a large number of active centers and an increased area of contact with the electrolyte.

The best version of this material synthesized by the authors, which showed the highest cyclic stability and charge/discharge rate in tests, continued to demonstrate excellent electrochemical properties (including the kinetics of lithium ion and electron transport) when used as part of a battery prototype with a lithium/manganese oxide cathode.

The team is encouraged by the potential prospects for their achievement: “Using a conductive filler backbone, we have developed an anode that enhances battery performance while providing reversible energy storage. This strategy could be applied to other transition metal selenides with high surface area and stable nanostructure, with applications in energy storage systems, electrocatalysis and semiconductors".

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Effect of water temperature on civil unrest 19.07.2012

Statisticians from Princeton University (USA) analyzed 234 episodes of civil unrest and unrest that took place from 1950 to 2004 in 175 countries of the world, and found that in 90 countries experiencing the influence of El Niño, the likelihood of conflicts during the years of this oceanic phenomenon was twice as high as in countries far from the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean.

El Niño is an intermittent warming of the upper layers of water off the coast of Peru, lasting more than a year. It affects the climate mainly in South America, where floods or droughts can occur during El Niño years. The weather affects mainly those countries where the entire economy is tied to agriculture and unrest can arise in case of crop failure. In the twentieth century, especially powerful El Niño events occurred in 1925-1926, 1982-1983 and 1997-1998.
