ERICSSON T39. Mobile phone review Review So, the second tri-band device from the new Ericsson line fell into my hands. The T39 does not have a speakerphone, which would be unrealistic given its dimensions - 96x50x18 mm. The weight of the device is only 86 grams. This was achieved not least through the use of a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 600 mAh. It is made flush with the rear surface of the case, although the strongly protruding base of the antenna is still puzzling. According to the manufacturer, the phone's talk time is up to 6 hours, and in standby mode - up to 150 hours. As practice has shown, in standby mode, the phone can work for about 3 days with 15-20 minutes of calls per day, the time for a full battery charge is about 2 hours. The function of calculating the approximate battery life deserves special mention: it works very well, one might even say, perfectly. It seemed to me that T39 doesn't look much different from Ericsson T29 (it seems that the success of the Ericsson T28s design predetermined the fate of all subsequent models of this company, which to some extent repeated its successful ideas). In my opinion, Ericsson phones lack diversity, and it's just external (that's right, a small lyrical digression). There are several color options for the case, I tested the device in a stylish dark blue color (Classic Blue) with a slightly rough plastic coating. A light gray antenna and a volume rocker on the side of the phone stand out against the general background. A slightly convex teardrop-shaped service indicator is located at the top end of the phone. There is an IrDA window on the right side surface. When you open the flip, you will see the T39 keyboard made of plastic and covered with silver paint. The numeric keys are very comfortable, problems arise only with pressing the 0 button, partially hidden behind the bottom edge of the flip. But taking into account the fact that on other Ericsson devices (for example, T20) access to the entire bottom row of keys was difficult, I am inclined to consider this annoying feature of the design as an unpleasant flaw rather than a serious drawback. The arrow key, which serves to navigate and access the menu, is made in the form of a rocker. If earlier it was 2 separate keys, now it is one. I was uncomfortable working with her because of her small size. It is quite possible that to another person they, on the contrary, will seem comfortable and pleasant to use. The Yes, No and C keys are curved and their tops peek out when the flip is closed, but you'll have to be a little dexterous to hit those keys by accident. The holder located at the back makes it possible to carry the phone on the belt. It is attached to the device with a screw, initially a rubber plug takes its place. By the way, the T39 fits very well in the pocket of not only jeans or trousers, but also a summer shirt or jacket. You do not experience the slightest discomfort, and, most importantly, outwardly nothing indicates the presence of a phone in your pocket. True, it is necessary to fasten the shirt pocket with a button, otherwise, with any strong inclination, the phone will fall to the floor. Functionality Peculiarities. Firstly, this is full support for the EMS standard, which allows you to send pictures, tones and melodies to other phones with the same capabilities. According to the EMS specification, even animation can be sent via T39, but only if this function is supported by the mobile operator. Unfortunately, at the moment, Moscow operators have neither support for this function, nor information about the timing of its introduction. It should be noted that the input in the T39, like in other devices from Ericsson, is implemented almost perfectly. When you press a key, the display shows a complete list of the corresponding letters and numbers. At any time, you can change the keyboard layout, for example, switch from English to Russian or any other supported by the phone. This feature is sometimes extremely useful when typing short messages or emails. The phone book is designed to store up to 510 numbers, and for one name, not only several phone numbers, but also other additional information (e-mail address, city, company name, etc.) can be recorded. Phonebook memory is dynamically allocated, so you are only limited by the total number of fields (510). You can set a voice tag for any name in the phone book, and you can also assign separate tags to different types of numbers. So, having recorded a label for a phone, for example, Igor, you can call both his general and mobile number. To do this, just say "Igor" and then name the number type label (of course, previously recorded). By the way, the user has the opportunity to configure the flip in such a way that when opened in standby mode, voice dialing is immediately activated. In addition to voice dialing, there are also voice tags for accessing menu items, the memory between the two types of tags is distributed dynamically, there are 50 of them in total. Recognition works pretty well, and there are no problems as such. The "magic word" function, which allows hands-free activation of voice dialing, makes this phone very convenient, and the implementation of voice dialing is the most successful to date. Comfort, unfortunately, turns into a decrease in the phone's standby time. Any of the 5 pictures available in the T39's memory can be used as a screen saver. It is convenient that you have to remember only one password instead of several. True, if you forget it, you will lose access to all passwords in general. It remains to say that certain restrictions on working with the menu and its items are imposed by a small screen size (only 3 lines of text). In this case, it is possible to change the font size, however, in my opinion, the default one is the most convenient. Communications This device has extremely rich features: e-mail and GPRS, WAP version 1.2.1 and HSCSD, Bluetooth. Wap-browser settings do not cause difficulties, everything is simple and clear. At the same time, version 1.2.1 differs from version 1.1 only in the support of secure connections, which is necessary in mobile commerce, for example, when paying for purchases from the phone. In our country, in the next year and a half, this service will be irrelevant. High-Speed Switched Data (HSCSD) will also not be in demand by the typical user, but it may be of interest to corporate buyers for whom high-speed network access is an urgent need. The GPRS settings are very simple, for Beeline it will look like this: AT+CGDCONT=1,"","internet.beeline.ru" log/pass - beeline number - *99# DNS1 - 194.190.192.034 DNS2 - 194.190.192.065 GPRS works, but data transfer speed leaves much to be desired, as is the case with Ericsson R520m. It's entirely possible that the network is to blame, but Motorola's phones do a pretty good job under the same conditions. Through GPRS, you can set up a mail client that works on the POP3 and SMTP protocols. In this case, you will need to specify the same settings as in your regular mail client on a PC (of course, for your mailbox). There are no problems with sending letters, but there are certain difficulties with receiving: the phone receives only the headers of letters. A nice feature of the T39 is the ability to send e-mails with attached photos that can be transferred from a digital camera equipped with an infrared port. Knowing that this camera supports more than just the image format, you can use this function to send small files that have been previously recorded on the camera or transferred from a PC. Unfortunately, the maximum attachment size is unknown, but by experience I found out that the phone refuses to accept more than 50 KB. It's quite possible that this feature is more intended for Ericsson's CommuniCam accessory (image resolution is 352x288 pixels, color depth is 24 bits, JPG file size is small). The camera can store up to 5 shots, it is not yet on sale, but the T39 has already been prepared to work with it. Now let's move on to the most interesting part of the review, namely the consideration of the Bluetooth function. In the review of the R520m, which I have to constantly refer to, I wrote that there are not so many Bluetooth devices in Moscow. Some readers gave me a list of 11 devices they found, apparently on price.ru. Here is the list:
So, let's not be lazy and consider everything in order. The main criterion for the popularity of technology for me is the availability of devices made for it and their price. In my opinion, the cost of an accessory cannot exceed or even be comparable to the price of the device itself, otherwise such accessories will not be in great demand, which will also affect the popularity of the technology itself. The first number is a laptop with a built-in adapter, its cost is from $1400 at retail. But here's the problem: the package does not include a Bluetooth adapter - you will have to purchase it for extra money. It's sad, isn't it?! The second number is the $3053 Toshiba Bluetooth PC Card #PA1E-350PCC for connecting Bluetooth devices to a PC. Expensive, but what can you do? At least these devices are on sale, but only in one place and in very limited quantities. You can continue to analyze this list point by point, but, frankly, it is a pity for the time. Most of the listed devices are not available in Moscow or even belong to the network category - well, I don’t need a print server at home! Everything else must be ordered. To be fair, it should be noted that numbers 5 and 6 are found on sale and are used to equip Bluetooth laptops. But here's the trouble - I don't need it: I want Bluetooth on my desktop computer. And there are simply no such solutions today at real prices. If someone has reliable information on this issue, then you are welcome. In the meantime, I believe that Bluetooth technology in our country, however, as well as in Europe, is extremely unpopular and single devices with Bluetooth functions do not do the weather. An Ericsson Bluetooth headset in Moscow sells for $230-250, which I personally consider a robbery, because external IR ports for a PC do not cost $200-300, although they are quite comparable in complexity to similar Bluetooth adapters. So, it was decided to test Bluetooth with a phone that supports this function, for the purity of the experiment, the R520m model was used. In addition to data transfer, the devices can be used to play together, for example, tennis. So, turn on Bluetooth in the menu and search for devices on the R520m; on another phone, we set the option in which the device becomes available for search. By the way, initially the phone is offered to be opened for access only for 3 minutes, then you will be asked again whether to continue the search. If yes, the search will be turned on all the time, which will reduce battery life. So, the devices have found each other - you can play tennis or transfer business cards from one device to another. In the second case, there are practically no problems: business cards leave normally and almost immediately appear on the second phone. The maximum line-of-sight distance from which it was possible to transmit business cards was about 3 meters instead of 10 prescribed by the standard. Testing this function with a doubles game of tennis showed that the maximum transmission range is about 2.5 meters, and any careless movement breaks the connection. Movement refers to the smooth movement of the phone in a plane, for example, to bring it closer to the eyes. Therefore, it is unrealistic to use Bluetooth for a joint game, it is much easier to use an infrared port for these purposes. Small summary And now I will tell you the most interesting thing, what, for example, in this phone simply struck me. So, Ericsson T39m has a normal sensitivity and it is quite comparable in this parameter, for example, with Nokia 6210. This model is free from the main drawback of Ericsson devices, which allows us to consider it as a serious competitor to other phones. By the way, I had the latest firmware version in my device, R2K. There are no complaints about the sound quality. The volume of the speaker is enough, but the volume of the call is not. The vibrating alert is also quite weak. If the GPRS service is really important for you, then buying this phone will not be the most justified investment of money: very low speeds (up to 14400) and only one plus - the connection does not break. I would like to note that if the next models from Ericsson have the same sensitivity as the T39, then the company will again be able to claim a place in the top three manufacturers. Of course, it will take time to break the stereotypes that have developed among users. And, by the way, it is quite possible that the new devices will be produced under a different trademark, since they will be produced by a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson created this year.
