The map - This is a reduced image of the earth's surface. In order to be able to use it, you need to know how many times this image is smaller than the actual one. Each map contains an indication of the scale used in its compilation, which allows its owner to judge the relationship between the length of the line on the map and the length of the corresponding line on the ground. Typically, the scale is indicated both in numerical form as a fraction, and in linear form.

Numerical scale

A numerical scale (for example, 1:50 000) captures the relationship between a line on the map and its corresponding line on the map displayed. So, one unit of length on a map with a scale of 1:50 000 corresponds to 50 thousand of the same units on the ground. In other words, the real world is rendered on a map at one fifty thousandth of its actual size. Thus, 1 cm on a 1:50 000 scale map represents 50 cm (that is, 000 m, or half a kilometer) on the ground.

Linear scale

A linear scale is a simple line or bar divided into units of length (usually kilometers or miles). You can measure the distance between two points on the map using a measuring compass (or by aligning the edge of the sheet with both points and marking the distance between them on the map with a pencil), which is then superimposed on a linear scale with reading the value of the real distance on the ground in the usual units of distance measurement.

How to go from a numerical scale to a linear one

The scale shows how many times the actual distances on the ground are reduced on the map. If we discard the last two zeros in the denominator of the numerical scale, then the remaining number will show how many meters are contained in one centimeter of the map. Therefore, in order to move from a numerical scale to a scale value, it is necessary for maps drawn up in metric measures to divide the denominator by 100 (the number of centimeters in 1 m), and for maps drawn up in old Russian measures, divide the denominator by 84 (the number of inches in 1 sazhen).

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Additionally, specially designed T-shirts and shorts are available for convenience, to which a mini air conditioner can be attached. The device can oh ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>
