ERICSSON R380S

The phone comes with the following kit: the phone itself, a Li-Ion battery, a travel charger, a desktop charger cradle, a data cable between the phone and a PC, a headset, a CD with software and instructions. As you can see, everything in the box with the phone was put to the maximum, and now the price does not seem so exorbitant.

So, I immediately decided to turn on the device and see what it can do. To do this, I inserted the SIM card into the holder and latched the battery. The card holder is quite interesting, since the card simply enters it along the guides and is fixed in them, the card is removed with a slight movement of the hand, which seems to be a trifle, but nice - you don’t need to pervert and move the holder’s latches, as on many other models.

But the battery did not please me as much as I would like. There is a lot of play in the latch area, and over time, I think it will increase. This feature is noticeable when you take the phone in your hand and press the back wall with your finger. Although, on the other hand, the contacts are arranged in such a way that the fidgeting of the battery does not particularly affect them. Unfortunately, data on how the battery will perform will not appear soon due to the novelty of the phone. The battery has a place for a pen or stylus, similar to a PDA. The stylus is taken out of the slot quite easily, if you do it not with your nails, but with the surface of your finger, as if squeezing it forward. It is practically not removed with a nail, and looking at its small size and notches, one is drawn to do it. (For those who are not familiar with the stylus and do not know what it is for, I will talk about it below).

So, having connected the battery, I was faced with the fact that it was completely discharged, I immediately thought that the phone had lain for a long time in a warehouse somewhere in Europe, but it turned out to be something else. When you first use the battery, you need to charge it for about 3 hours, and later, after being completely discharged while using the phone, it is quite possible that you will see such a picture more than once. Batteries for this model are used BST-10, it's a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 950 mAh, which looks quite impressive. In fact, everything is much worse, since the battery lasts a maximum of two days, and the intensity of conversations is from 20 to 30 minutes a day. According to other users, the maximum standby time is up to 3 days with a very small number of calls. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2 hours. It is enough to leave a partially discharged phone turned off for a while so that the indicator cheerfully increases after turning it on, but the strangest thing is that the phone will actually work a little longer.

In general, with the battery indicator, everything was not clear to me. The first time the indicator showed an empty battery, I waited long enough for the phone to turn off or some kind of low battery warning. The result was only a couple of hours later in the form of a warning signal and a change in the color of the service indicator from green to red. On the one hand, this is unusual, but on the other hand, over time, I really liked the peculiar behavior of the indicator, since it leaves a certain margin of safety for the user and does not confront the fact that the battery is low at the last moment.

While the phone was charging in its cradle, I took out the CD and started installing the software. By the way, it is impossible to incorrectly connect the cable from the charger to the cradle, this has been verified empirically.

The disk contains instructions in several languages, and, most importantly, in Russian. In total, there are about 300 pages of instructions, and therefore it becomes clear why there is no printed version of it, although sometimes it would be very useful (for example, on the road, where there is no computer).

So, on the disk, in addition to the instructions, there is R380 Communication Suite, software for synchronizing data from a phone to a PC. When Windows boots up, a nice blue phone will hang in the taskbar next to the clock, but only if the cable is connected to the phone. In general, installing the program and the cable connected to the COM port does not cause the slightest difficulty, everything goes like clockwork.

With the help of R380 Communication Suite, you can make copies of the contents of your phone at any time and then, if necessary, restore everything from a PC, including all your information - notes, phones, and more. Archiving data takes from 30 seconds to several minutes, however, as well as the data recovery process. True, when archiving, you should remember that all user data will not be saved, only the basic settings are saved, and if you, for example, recorded your own melody, then it will not be saved.

But by default, you are only offered to synchronize organizer data with one of the supported applications. The list is impressive, including MS Outlook, MS Exchange, MS Schedule, as well as Lotus Organizer, Lotus Notes. Lotus Organizer version 5 is present on this disk, however, in English, but the program deserves to be used. In my opinion, this is one of the prettiest organizers that lived on my computer, although, of course, this is a matter of taste.

Synchronization with the installed Lotus Organizer is very simple, the only thing you need to do once is to select a data file in Lotus, in which all information will be written. True, there is a possibility that if you choose an empty file for synchronization, synchronize it with your phone, but do not save the changes to the PC, then the next time you synchronize with this empty file, all data on the phone will be deleted. I accidentally burned myself on this, I do not recommend it to you.

In terms of time, synchronization is not much different from archiving data and takes a couple of minutes. I completely forgot to mention that during the first synchronization you will be greeted by a synchronization wizard who will offer you to select settings and name your phone, i.e. give it a name. It must be nice to name him something after you.

The only drawback of synchronization that I noticed is that if you have phone book entries imported from a SIM card, then only names will be converted to Lotus Organizer, and the numbers themselves will disappear along the way.

And, perhaps, the most interesting item on the disk is the installation of additional languages in the phone. By default, only English is installed in the R380s, but it is possible to install others, such as Russian. The secondary language coexists peacefully alongside English, but handwriting recognition is implemented only for the primary language, i.e. English. It is not recommended to install more than two additional language packs as this can cause problems. Even using Master Reset which should return all settings to factory and English sometimes after installing several language packs does not help. Be careful.

After installing the Russian language in your phone, just turn it off and on again and the new language settings will take effect. At this stage, I had a small problem: the phone did not turn on the first time, or rather, it turned on, judging by the squeak, registered on the network, but the screen was dead. Switching off / on again fixed everything, and the Russian language appeared on the phone.

Operating mode - phone

The first settings have been made and now you can use the phone for its intended purpose. As you can see from the title, it is assumed that you can use the smartphone in two ways - as a simple phone and as an organizer. Let's consider the first option first. In it, the R380s is similar to the R320s and differs from the latter only in thickness. The dimensions of the device 130x50x26 mm cannot be called gigantic, it fits in a jeans pocket, and it is also convenient to hold it in your hand. Of course, it is larger than such business phones as Siemens S35 or Samsung SGH-2400, but not much more than the same Nokia 6210. The weight of the device is 169 grams, which is very good for its class.

The keyboard is plastic and rough to the touch, the buttons are large enough and comfortable. There are 4 navigation keys, as well as a dedicated button for accessing the phone book. The antenna is external, fixed, rather interesting shape, however, as on all models of the R-series. At the top is a service indicator that flashes periodically. Unfortunately, Ericsson engineers never bothered to make an option to turn it off, although this feature is present in many simpler devices.

On the right side wall there is a voice recording key and an IR port window. On the left, a two-position key is used to change the volume of the speaker during a call or force the backlight to turn on, just move it back and forth.

Voice dialing works very well even in noisy places, in addition to dialing 10 numbers, it is possible to record two commands - these are the "answer" and "busy" commands, they can be used during a call if speech recognition is enabled, but no special presses on the keys is not required, everything is done without hands.

The sound quality in the speaker is very good, I would say crystal clear. During the use of the phone, some noise and communication failures were observed, as well as an echo (only with a very weak signal). The phone unexpectedly pleased with its sensitivity - where the Nokia 8210 did not work, it worked. Although they write that its sensitivity is subjectively worse than that of the Nokia 7110. I do not agree with this, although, of course, it all depends on the specific phone model. The one I had proved to be very good as a phone, I won’t sing praises to it, but it really amazed me, because after using the T10s and T28s I have a very cool attitude towards this manufacturer. Now I have to think about what can, R380s after some time will become my next device.

The device is dual-standard and supports all kinds of network functions, up to data encryption; accordingly, these functions must be supported by the operator.

It makes no sense to write about the size of the phone book, since it is allocated dynamically from the 1.2 megabytes present. You can have a huge phone book and no notes, or it can be the other way around. In my opinion, it is fair that you decide what is needed and in what proportions.

Access to the phone book, events of the day, inbox, recent calls list and quick phone settings can be accessed by pressing any of the horizontal arrows.

And now we need to go to the organizer mode in order to consider the whole mass of possibilities provided by this device.

Operating mode - organizer

All you have to do to switch to this mode is to fold down the phone's keypad, which is made similar to flips on other models. And here the first surprise awaits us, it turns out that the buttons are not mechanical, but simply serve to press the touch screen.

The touch panel displays the Phone menu. Hereinafter, I will describe all the menus for the Russian-language package. At the top there are tabs with which you can access the following menu items:

  • Phone (calls, call list, settings)
  • Contacts (information about the owner of the phone, phone book, search)
  • Messages (e-mail, SMS messages)
  • Calendar (tasks, appointments, reminders)
  • WAP (browser, bookmarks, history)
  • Additional (Notepad, clock, calculator, reverse game, system - here you can find the software version, screen calibration, memory capacity, etc.)

As you can see, the menu is not so much, but they contain a lot more than the most sophisticated business-class phone can do. Let's start in order, with the Phone menu. The Call item allows you to dial a number from this mode of operation, it duplicates the usual dialing. I have never used it, but someone might need it. Makes sense only when using a telephone headset or speakerphone. To exit this menu, as, indeed, any other, just click on the icon with the image of an arrow up.

A more interesting item is the Call List - in fact, a call log, and, moreover, very advanced. The call list is sorted by time, in particular Today, This week, This month, One month ago, as well as by type of calls - All calls, Incoming, Outgoing, Missed calls. For each call, you can also view more detailed information, such as Number, Name (if the person is in the phone book), date and time, call duration, call type (voice or data), and status (answered or missed).

As you can see, the list of calls is the ultimate dream of any person, and taking into account the fact that you can view the total time of calls, divided into outgoing and incoming, it's a miracle!

So, moving on, the Settings section contains all kinds of settings that allow you to comfortably manage your phone. Here, in particular, you can select ringtones (14 recorded and 4 of your own), as well as whether the vibrating call will work simultaneously with the call or will work only in silent mode. In general, there are no user profiles in this device, but those settings that are present provide access to all necessary functions quite easily and quickly.

Recording your own melody is generally a beautiful thing, as it is possible to type it on a piano-like keyboard. Here is a picture, it looks really nice.

Voice commands are also recorded in the parameters. It is here, and not in the phone book, that 10 voice dialing numbers are stored. They are present only here, and not in the phone book. Of course, there is a logic here, but it would be possible to combine them.

All kinds of blocking, forwarding are immediately set, a greeting is edited, the introduction of a list of the last dialed numbers is enabled or disabled. By the way, this list in phone mode is called up by simply pressing the Yes button, i.e. call keys.

Now let's move on to the Contacts menu. When you install your SIM card, the phone does not show your entries, they need to be imported, and you can import one or all entries. At the same time, after reading the phone book of the SIM card, you need to select import again, which seems redundant to me when importing all entries. The disadvantage is also that you can not delete all entries from the phone book in one fell swoop, each contact will have to be deleted manually. Although, maybe it can be done, and if you know how, please write to me.

Each contact contains a lot of information, so, in addition to the first and last name, three types of phones, email address, website address, you can enter data about the position, organization name, full address with a breakdown into fields (Country, City, Zip Code, Street, Region ) and enter a note.

To navigate through the phone book, alphabetic bookmarks are used at the top, and there is also a search. When viewing information in a book, you can immediately write an SMS message to a person by clicking on the word SMS or dial the desired number by clicking on it.

Well, if we're talking about the short message service, let's take a look at the Messages menu. There is an Inbox folder (as well as the Outbox, Sent, Drafts folders), which contains all SMS messages, as well as email messages. Yes, the phone can work with e-mail and not only receive it, but also send it. What is almost impossible with another phone has become a reality here, typing is not as difficult as on conventional devices. In general, there are two ways to enter texts in the R380s, the first and easiest, in my opinion, is to use the on-screen keyboard when you select the desired letters with the stylus, the second is to recognize handwritten characters. Unfortunately, the recognition only works with English, but graffiti is not required. That is, of course, you can, but the phone will also understand ordinary letters, which is a big progress compared to the Palm family. Here it is worth saying warm words towards the developers of a special mobile version of the Epoc operating system, which is used in the phone. It's a bit different than what's used in a PDA like the Psion Revo, but it's better. It does not require the installation of new applications, hence the requirements, where the main thing, of course, is low power consumption. Perhaps, when using a more powerful battery, it will be possible to achieve 4-day operation of the phone.

Settings for mail and WAP service can be made in the Advanced menu by selecting the System item and then Options. If for mail you only need to configure, as usual, a mail service, then for WAP you also need to specify an ip-address. However, in both cases, the parameter will be configured by the service provider. In my case, it was the Moscow operator MTS and, accordingly, the number 0885, analog, MTS username. Problems may arise when entering a password containing numbers, then you will need to switch the keyboard layout to Russian, type numbers there, and then switch back to English. Otherwise, everything is rather banal and does not deserve special attention, with one exception: you can copy pieces of text and save them to your phone. Attention! With the old version of the firmware, the WAP software from MTS does not work and the connection breaks at 40 seconds. The new version of the firmware can be obtained from the Marvi service center, but the software for synchronizing the phone with the PC that comes with the phone will not work and you will have to look for a new version of this software as well. You are also provided with a small cache and you can adjust its size (the default is 16 kilobytes). For mail, the most interesting possibility is getting the settings for connecting to the provider or receiving them along with the letter. The phone also has the ability to read connected SMS messages, such as, for example, Nokia 3310 or Ericsson T20s.

Now let's move on to the Calendar menu, here behind this simple name lies a powerful organizer. You are given the opportunity to view all events for one day, week or month. Events can be anything: from a reminder to call, to a meeting or some business. In any case, you can set up a reminder and make an additional text note for the event. It seems to be nothing special, but the organization is extremely convenient, sometimes more convenient than on Palm V, although comparable.

And, perhaps, it remains to mention the Additional menu. There is a reversi game here, only one, and on this device one would expect more interesting games, and in large numbers. The calculator is very convenient, but it could not be less, given the large touch screen. There is also a notepad in which you can write small text notes. And the last one is the watch. You can set the watch to two time zones, your home and destination, which is extremely convenient if you travel a lot. Switching between belts is very simple. There is also an alarm clock here, which, if you do not turn it off, will wake you up in the morning for 2 minutes, then calm down and work again after 9 minutes and so on 10 times. The same order, however, applies to reminders, if you do not turn them off.

A small conclusion

Ericsson R380s is a marvel that is available today. If you were going to buy a PDA, then maybe you should consider buying this smartphone. As a rule, hybrid devices lose both in convenience and performance to their parents, but this statement practically does not apply to this device. The biggest disadvantage is the impossibility of recording new programs, but this is also a hidden advantage, since in this way the stability of the system becomes an order of magnitude higher, and sometimes this is the most important thing. The presence of a built-in voice recorder is also a definite plus. As a simple telephone, the device showed itself from the best side. Much to my surprise, he was a pleasure to work with. The sensitivity and quality of speech, in my subjective opinion, is one of the best I have ever heard. The big disadvantage is the impossibility of sending and receiving faxes, although the device has all the prerequisites for this.

Accessories from T28s, R310s are suitable for this phone. To my joy, you can carry this phone in a universal holster, since the native holster seemed narrow to me and I had to turn on the auto-lock of the keyboard.

After two weeks of using this smartphone, I was left with the impression of a good, solid and, most importantly, reliable thing. For all the time he never let me down and, by the way, I taught him how to communicate with my Palm V. It's a shame that there are no devices of this class on the market, because interest in them is growing every year, and the R380s is quite an industrial design without obvious flaws , with only minor rough edges, the main of which is the short battery life and the lack of original high-capacity batteries.
