Car enthusiasts are well aware of how much trouble conventional double-leaf garage doors cause. Particular difficulties arise in winter, when you have to remove snow in front of the garage almost daily, otherwise it is almost impossible to open or close the gate leaves. Meanwhile, there are many designs devoid of these shortcomings. Among them are those that move to the side, rise up, fold like an accordion. There are also flexible "doors" that are wound on a drum located at the top of the box. True, all of them are not very reliable, since they have open hinges or through slots.

I bring to the attention of readers a variant of the gate, the only leaf of which rises up and fits under the ceiling. Unlike those listed, this design does not have the indicated disadvantages: it does not have a single open hinge, through slots, and also has a reliable porch along the entire inner perimeter of the doorway frame.

The sash opens easily by lifting with a counterweight hanging on a cable on the inner wall of the garage. Properly selected weight allows you to do this without much effort.

The lower part of the sash in the lowered position is fixed in a channel or holders welded to the frame of the doorway, and guides from the channel located on the side walls of the garage are welded to it. Two rollers on each side, moving in guides, allow the sash to withstand heavy loads, which makes it quite reliable.

The upper part of the gate is locked with two hecks and, accordingly, with two locks. A stopper is installed to fix the sash in the open position.

For gates of this design, it is not difficult to adapt an electric drive with conventional or even remote radio or IR control. The block on which the counterweight hangs should be replaced with a drum driven by an electric motor through a gearbox, and the drum and gearbox should be connected by an electromagnetic clutch - in case of a power failure.

Polyethylene liquid fuel 04.02.2022

Polyethylene is the most common plastic in the world. More than 100 tons are produced every year. The problem is that it is an incredibly inert material that does not react with almost anything, and therefore does not decompose under natural conditions.

Zheng Huan, a chemist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was able to decompose polyethylene at 150 degrees Celsius by adding an organometallic catalyst, a small, commercially available organic molecule containing iridium. The catalyst weakens the bonds responsible for the strong structure of polyethylene, accelerating its decomposition and turning it into a liquid product.

"The resulting products are much cleaner than conventional incineration products," Huang says, adding that the reaction is easier to control and the liquid can be used as a fuel.

So far, the process has been demonstrated on small samples of plastic bags, bottles, and food packaging.
