Solar Desalination System 07.04.2024

Lack of fresh water is one of the most pressing problems facing a significant part of the world's population. In search of effective and environmentally friendly methods to solve this problem, researchers from various educational and scientific institutions are introducing innovative technologies based on the use of solar energy.

Researchers from King's College London, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Helmhotz Institute for Renewable Energy Systems have developed an innovative system that uses solar energy to desalinate salty groundwater. This promises to be a cheaper and more effective solution compared to traditional methods.

About 40% of the world's population faces fresh water shortages, and 4 billion people experience acute water shortages for at least a month a year, according to the UN.

Desalination technology works like this: Specialized membranes are used to channel salt ions, and then the salt water is separated from the fresh, potable water.

The team also developed a way to flexibly adjust the speed and voltage of the system, allowing it to adapt to different lighting conditions.

Initial trials were conducted in India, where access to clean water is a particularly acute problem. Successful results showed that the system is capable of providing up to 10 cubic meters of fresh water per day, which is enough to support the livelihoods of thousands of people.

This is not only an environmentally friendly solution, but also cost-effective. By using solar energy and inexpensive components, the system offers access to potable water at a lower cost than traditional methods.

An advanced solar-powered desalination system opens new horizons in solving the problem of access to fresh water. Its efficiency and environmental friendliness make it an important step towards ensuring sustainable access to water resources for all segments of the population.
