To power many amateur radio designs, autonomous power sources, such as batteries, are used. To avoid useless discharging of the source, it is necessary to turn off the power of the device in time. However, sometimes this is forgotten, so in some cases it makes sense to supplement the design with a timer that will turn off the power of the device if the owner forgot about it.

If the required operating time of the device does not exceed 10 ... 15 minutes, a simple timer is quite suitable, the description of which is presented below. It is controlled by one button, and only one microcircuit is needed to make it. The timer circuit is shown in the figure. It is assembled according to a slightly modified circuit of a pulse shaper on a D-flip-flop, the description of which is given in the article by Alekseev S. Shapers and generators on CMOS microcircuits. - Radio, 1985, No. 8, p. 31-35.

Timer on D-trigger
Timer circuit

In the initial state, at the input C of the D-flip-flop (pin 3) and at its direct output (pin 1, Output 1) there is a low logic level. The timing capacitor C2 is discharged. In this mode, the current consumed by the device does not exceed a few microamperes.

When the SB1 button is pressed briefly, the D-flip-flop switches to a single state at the direct output and the charging of the capacitor C2 begins through resistors R2 and R3. Capacitor C1 eliminates the influence of the bounce of the button contacts. When the capacitor C2 is charged to a voltage corresponding to a high logic level, the D-flip-flop will be reset to zero and the device will return to its original state. In this case, the capacitor C2 will quickly discharge through the current-limiting resistor R2 and the diode VD1. With the values \u3b\u2bof the elements R10 and C1 indicated in the diagram, the timer exposure time is about XNUMX minutes. You can turn off the timer before this time by pressing the SBXNUMX button again.

With this timer, it is best to control the FET key. In this case, you can use the signal from both the direct and the inverse output of the trigger. Depending on the current consumed by the load, a high-power (IRF540, IRF640, IRFS34, IRFZ44 and similar) or low-power (KP505, BS170, 2N7000, 2N7002 series) switching field-effect switching transistor with an insulated gate and an n-type channel ( or p-type). An n-channel transistor is connected as follows. Source - to the minus of the power source, gate - to pin 1 of the DD1 microcircuit, drain - to the negative line of the load power supply. The plus of the power supply is connected to the positive power line of the load.

Imported oxide capacitors are used, and it is desirable to use C2 tantalum and, possibly, for a higher rated voltage, in this case the leakage current will be less, and the exposure time will be more stable. Resistors - MLT, C2-23, resistor R3 can be made up of several connected in series. Button - any small-sized with self-return. At a supply voltage of 9 V, a K176TM2 microcircuit can be used, at a voltage of 3 ... 6 V - a 74NS74 microcircuit. In the latter case, a field-effect transistor with a low opening voltage, for example, the IRL2505 series, must be used for switching.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Motorcycle powered by beer 16.05.2023

Inventor from Minnesota, USA, Kai Mikaelson presented a motorcycle powered by beer, which he created in his garage in Bloomington.

Instead of a gasoline engine, the bike has a 14-gallon barrel with a heating coil that turns the beer into superheated steam that propels the vehicle forward. According to the inventor's estimates, the motorcycle is capable of speeds up to 150 miles (240 km) per hour.

Mikaelson himself explained his choice of fuel by the fact that gasoline prices are rising, and he, as a non-drinker, could not think of a better way than to use beer as fuel.

The bike has yet to be tested on the drag strip to see what it's capable of, but Michaelson's son Buddy said his father plans to convert the bike to all fluids, allowing it to be used not only for fun, but also for more serious purposes.

Michaelson and his son Buddy hope that their new inventive masterpiece will attract the attention of the world community and become the subject of much discussion. However, they already know that this motorcycle will end up in a home museum, where it will attract the attention of everyone who visits this amazing collection of inventions.

In this way, Kai Mikaelson continues to dazzle the world with his unusual and creative ideas, which can be implemented in a wide range of fields. His beer-powered motorcycle is another example of how out-of-the-ordinary thinking and creativity will always find ways to surprise and inspire people around the world.
