What were military armored tires?

It is known that in the wars of the 19th century, as well as the First and Second World Wars, many countries used armored trains. However, in addition to this, they tried to fight with the help of individual combat units - armored rubber. They were almost like tanks, but limited in movement only by rails.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

By what deeds did the Viking Thorvald, his son Eirik Raudi and grandson Leif Eirikson enter the history of geographical discoveries?

The Norwegian family, of which these persons are representatives, has accomplished an outstanding feat: in just three generations it has crossed the entire North Atlantic from end to end.

Thorvald, expelled from Norway in 960 for murder, founded a settlement in Iceland.

His son Eirik Raudi (Eirik the Red), also, by the way, expelled (already from Iceland) for the murder of two of his neighbors, went further west and in 981-983 discovered the islands of Greenland, Disko and Baffin Island, Davis Strait and Cape Baffin. Leif Eirikson (Leif the Happy), the son of Eirik the Red, who inherited from his grandfather and father a passion for sailing to unknown lands, in 1004 crossed the Davis Strait and reached the coast of North America, ahead of Christopher Columbus by almost five centuries.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Mass production of bioprocessors 28.02.2016

A bioprocessor is a SiP capable, if the device has the appropriate sensors, to provide measurements of various vital signs of the owner (ECG, GSR, body temperature, and so on).

The Korean giant has published an official press release on this development. The company reports that this very Bio-Processor, hiding behind the catalog number S3FBP5A, is already in production.

The new SiP includes an analog interface (AFE), a Cortex-M4 microcontroller, a power control integrated circuit (PMIC), a digital signal processor (DSP), and 512 kB eFlash memory. All this allows the solution to process signals from sensors without requiring external processing units for each of them. True, some sources for some reason claim that Bio-Processor is able to track the owner’s indicators mentioned above without sensors at all, but this, of course, is not true.

Thanks to the integration of multiple blocks, Samsung's development takes up four times less space than the now common combined solutions that can perform the same range of tasks.

You can also find out the exact list of SiP features from the press release. So, the bioprocessor is able to measure and record bioelectrical impedance, photoplethysmogram, electrocardiogram, skin temperature and galvanic skin reactions. In turn, this data allows you to calculate the mass fraction of fat in the body, determine the heart rate and indicate the level of stress.

In finished devices, the development of Samsung will appear in the first half of this year.
