How many species of animals on the planet have disappeared because of cats?

Specialists from the Smithsonian Conservation Institute in the United States said that cats are one of the main threats to wildlife. In the US alone, they annually kill up to 4 billion birds and up to 20 billion mammals, most of which become victims of homeless and feral cats. In general, cats are responsible for the extinction of at least 30 animal species on the planet - mostly extermination occurred in places where there were no cats historically, but then they were introduced by humans and disrupted the ecological balance.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is an operetta?

As an independent genre, operetta arose relatively recently, in the middle of the XNUMXth century in France. And before that, an operetta (translated from Italian "operetta" means "small opera") was called a small comic opera.

The operetta has everything: song verses, dances, conversational dialogues. And the operatic forms in the operetta - the aria, the vocal ensemble, the choir and the ballet scenes - have a lighter character.

Compared with opera, there are also new musical forms in operetta: couplets - songs almost always performed at a fast pace and recitative, as well as cancan - a fast dance, which often becomes the culmination of a performance. Great attention in operettas is paid, of course, to the text, which should be witty, cheerful, playful and very bright. Operetta artists must certainly have a good singing voice, acting skills and excellent diction.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

The inhabitants of Pompeii sorted garbage for reuse 29.04.2020

Archaeologists have found that the inhabitants of Pompeii were engaged in sorting garbage, and also exchanged construction waste for reuse.

An analysis of soil samples that covered the debris found within Pompeii and outside the city showed that organic and construction waste was stored separately. That is, the ancient Romans sorted garbage.

"The walls of buildings in the city of Pompeii were also made of garbage - ancient Roman builders used materials such as crushed tiles, fragments of ceramics, fragments of plaster, and so on. Smooth and plastered walls are actually made of garbage. But something else is interesting .

An analysis of the soil, particles of which were preserved in this garbage, showed that it was carefully sorted before being reused. Obviously, the inhabitants of Pompeii and the surrounding area collected, sorted and sold garbage for reuse," says Allison Emmerson, professor at Tulane University of Louisiana (USA), author of the study.

It was previously believed that Pompeii's dumps were formed from garbage that was cleaned out of the city after a devastating earthquake in 62 AD, which killed 2 of the city's 12 inhabitants.) But now it has become clear to scientists that the origin of the dumps is different.
