Why is one of the whites of the human eye named after Pikachu?

In 2008, Japanese scientists at the Osaka Institute of Biological Sciences discovered a protein that plays an important role in signaling between the ribbon synapses of the human eye's photoreceptors and dendrites. They named this protein "Pikachurin" - in honor of the movement at lightning speed and the electrical abilities of the Pokémon Pikachu.

What is radio astronomy?

In 1931, a communications engineer at Bell Laboratories was investigating atmospheric radio interference that could affect transoceanic telephone communications. He caught some noises, clearly not coming from a thundercloud, but from somewhere in space. He discovered that it is possible to receive radiation from the galaxy. Thus was born a new branch of astronomy - radio astronomy.

Radio astronomy is developing in two directions. With the help of special antennas, it is possible to capture the radiation of space objects. This may be thermal radiation (radiation of radio waves emitted by any hot body). But there are also noises, or static interference of cosmic origin, also picked up from space, but not at all thermal in origin. Another branch of radio astronomy is sending signals to objects such as meteors and the Moon and picking up their reflections. This is how radar works.

Radio astronomy is most useful for studying the Sun, meteors, the Moon, and the planets of the solar system. By capturing the reflection of rays from meteors, we learn a lot about their orbits. Exploring the moon using radio astronomy techniques, we learn a lot about its surface. So, even before people set foot on the moon, thanks to radio astronomy data, scientists already knew that its surface is a rock crushed into dust. Probably one of the most exciting areas of radio astronomy is the search for signals from other worlds.

Now radio telescopes have been improved to the point where they can pick up signals coming from a distance of almost eighty trillion kilometers. What signals are scientists hoping to pick up? It is believed that if somewhere in deep space there is a civilization other than ours, and it wants to make its presence known, then our brothers in mind will probably send some very simple signal, such as a series of numbers.

It is also believed that these signals are likely to be received at a purity of 1420 MHz - the frequency at which simple hydrogen emits radiation waves in outer space.

300 GB freeze-ray optical disk storage system 16.03.2016

Panasonic unveiled an optimized 300GB freeze-ray optical disc storage system at the OCP Summit held on March 9 and 10 in San Jose, California, USA. The new product is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2016 and will be used in the next generation of high-performance data centers, where it will complement traditional hard disk and tape storage tools.

The Panasonic optical disc system is already being used by corporations and government agencies whose activities require long-term data storage. The announcement of the freeze-ray system, which was developed and tested in the data centers of a cloud service provider in the United States, took place at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, USA. The first generation of the system used 100 GB Blu-ray discs.

To increase storage capacity, the optimized freeze-ray system uses 300 GB Archival Discs, which provide 1,9 PB (1 petabyte = 1 terabytes) of storage in a standard 000-inch rack.

As noted in Panasonic, data centers need tools for secure data storage for many decades. Non-rewritable Archival Discs meet these requirements. Being WORM-carriers (Write Once Read Many), they ensure the impossibility of overwriting or falsifying existing data and the estimated shelf life of over 100 years, the company says. Drives can be used at room temperature, which reduces data center power costs.

Going forward, Panasonic plans to expand the capacity of the Archival Disc to 500 GB and 1 TB to create even larger storage systems totaling several petabytes. The use of freeze-ray will contribute to the further evolution of data centers and reduce the cost of data processing and storage.
