Galician rooster

Latin
Latin

Phraseologism: Galician rooster.

Meaning: Frenchman.

Origin: The ancient Romans called the Gauls the Celts who inhabited Gaul - the territory of modern France, Belgium and Northern Italy. The Latin word "gallus" means not only "gall", but also "rooster". The French scientist Adolf Blok explained that the Romans gave this name to the Celts because they were all red-haired and their fiery red crests resembled cockscombs. During the bourgeois French revolution of the XVIII century. A competition was announced for drawing a new coin. "After Augustin Dupre proposed to mint the genius of France, writing on the altar," the report of the jury of the 1791 competition says, "the members of the committee advised to add a rooster on one side of the altar - the emblem of vigilance." Dupre's design, with a rooster added to it, was used to mint twenty-franc coins. The rooster depicted on the coins, the French, who considered the Gauls to be their ancestors, interpreted it as the "Gallic rooster" and began to consider it their national emblem. The Gallic rooster was expelled by the empire of Napoleon I, but it was restored in 1830, replacing the "Bourbon lilies". Under Louis Philippe, the image of the Gallic rooster began to be used on banners and hilts of edged weapons. Napoleon III (emperor since 1852) again abolished the Gallic rooster, but it was again restored by the Third Republic, depicting him since 1871 on twenty hundred-franc coins. In 1899, the President of the French Republic issued a decree to mint the image of the Gallic rooster on ten- and twenty-franc coins. The French numismatist Ducroc argued that the Gallic rooster is incorrectly considered a national emoleme, proving this by the fact that in the collection of Gallic coins stored in the Paris National Library, out of 10 coins, only fourteen depict a rooster, while playing on the double meaning of the word "Gallus", as Ducroc explained, arose in the Renaissance and goes back to the Poem of the Rooster (413) by Passavant. Nevertheless, the expression "Gallic rooster" entered the literary speech as an allegory of France.

Random phraseology:

To spread thought along the tree.

Meaning:

In giving in unnecessary details, digressing from the main idea, touching on different, side topics, like the branches of a tree, topics, etc. (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

An incorrectly translated line from the monument of ancient Russian literature "The Tale of Igor's Campaign", which nevertheless lives its own independent life in modern Russian. In the "Word" it is said: "Boyan prophetic, if someone wanted to compose a song, spread his mind over a tree, like a gray wolf on the ground, a blue-gray eagle under the clouds." "Mys" in translation from the Old Slavonic "squirrel". Accordingly, the author says that Boyan, composing a song, embraced the whole world with his mind's eye - he ran like a squirrel on a tree, like a gray wolf - on the ground, flew like an eagle under the clouds. It is noteworthy that, for example, in the Pskov province, even in the XNUMXth century. the squirrel was called that way - "mouse".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Prototype all-optical WDM switch 04.03.2016

Huawei introduced the world's first 320T centralized all-optical WDM OXC switch prototype at Mobile World Congress 2016. Each OXC has a switching capacity of 320T, which is 12 to 16 times the switching capacity of traditional OTN devices. The power consumption of an OXC optical switch is one thousand times less than that of a conventional OTN switch. OXC brings high capacity, low power consumption and low latency to the cloud data center (DPC) era.

The rapid growth of cloud technologies and services requires telecommunications companies around the world to focus on transforming networks for the data center. The growth in services for data center interconnection places high demands on switching capacity at the super-core nodes of the network. However, the devices that are used today at these nodes do not meet the switching requirements of 100T and above.

Huawei OXC provides centralized optical switching technologies with minimal maintenance requirements and low power consumption, and implements all-optical switching with low installation, operation and maintenance costs.

OXC uses a centralized N x N switching architecture, providing 1+1 optical crossover capability, flexible, non-blocking, wavelength and direction independent switching. For the first time in history, topologically independent, all-optical switching is a reality.

The rapid development of the information industry is driving the modernization of the backbone networks of telecommunications companies, as requirements for bandwidth, traffic optimization, reliability, operation and maintenance are increasing. Huawei Transport Network solutions use advanced optical transmission technologies, meet the current and future requirements of carrier-class core networks, and help carriers successfully meet the challenges of big data processing.
