Why are some of Euler's discoveries named after other scientists?

Leonhard Euler made a huge number of discoveries. A large number of physical and mathematical objects are named in his honor, and more than once: there are several Euler formulas, Euler equations, Euler theorems, Euler numbers. To avoid too much ambiguity, some of these discoveries and theorems are named after the scientists who first made or proved them after Euler.

Why is a black cat considered a bad omen?

Today, millions of people believe that if a black cat crosses the road, bad luck will soon follow. This religious prejudice originated many thousands of years ago.

The ancient Egyptians worshiped the cat and considered it sacred. They had a goddess named Pasht, who had a cat's head. The Egyptians believed that their goddess Pasht had nine lives. This explains why many people continue to think that a cat has nine lives. When a cat died in ancient Egypt, a mummy was made.

A graveyard has been discovered containing thousands of black cat mummies! When people believed in the existence of witches, they associated the black cat with the witch. They believed that black cats were witches in disguise. Killing a cat did not mean killing a witch, since a witch could take the form of a cat nine times.

In the Middle Ages, it was believed that witches and sorcerers always used the brain of a black cat to make a mysterious potion. As a result of all these associations, the black cat has become a symbol of bad luck.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Characters and musical tastes 10.08.2015

It is unlikely that anyone will argue that our musical tastes depend on personality traits. But is it possible to say something about a person by the music that he listens to: for example, that love for one style or direction betrays an analytical mindset, and love for another - more inconstancy, unreliability of character?

Relevant studies have been conducted, but usually the emphasis has been on personality traits such as extraversion, neuroticism, openness to new things, etc. David Greenberg from Cambridge, together with colleagues, decided to build an experiment differently - they wanted to find out if music indicates cognitive or cognitive abilities. These abilities were considered in a wide range: for example, on one side were high empathic skills, involving immersion in the thoughts and feelings of another person, and on the other - the ability to systematize, to analyze complex phenomena and identify patterns in them.

As part of a psychological test, four thousand volunteers were offered several statements, for example: "I always feel when a person says one thing and thinks another" or "When I buy audio equipment, I always pay attention to technical details" - the participants in the experiment had to determine how much such definitions apply to themselves. Then they were given to listen to 50 musical compositions of various genres - the music had to be rated as liking or disliking on a 9-point scale. Well, then the answers to the psychological test were compared with musical sympathies.

In an article in PLoS ONE, the authors write that those with good empathy liked modern rhythm and blues, soft rock, and what is called mellow music, which is characterized by a soft and pleasant sound. In general, it was not too energetic music, often saturated with negative emotions and, as they say, with emotional depth. Systematizing, analytical properties were those who liked energetic, intense music with positive emotions and / or relatively complex arrangement. Specific authors and performers here could be very different: for example, empaths most of all liked the song "All of me" by the great jazz singer Billie Holiday and "Crazy little thing called love" by Queen, and "analysts" - one of Scriabin's etudes, "God save the Queen" by The Sex Pistols and "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. According to the authors of the work, the selected emotional and cognitive parameters of the personality coincided much more clearly with musical tastes than openness to new experience, extroversion, etc. - in the sense that it was possible to more accurately say what kind of music would be liked by the psychological test.

The results obtained well illustrate the well-known truth that we perceive music (and indeed any art in general) with the mind and heart, that is, direct emotional perception is combined with an analysis of what we have heard, and in different music the proportion here shifts in one direction or another. From a practical point of view, this may be of interest not only to those who, roughly speaking, sell music, but also to teachers - obviously, in order for a person to become interested in music, it must at least at first completely coincide with his psychological attitudes.
