A funny toy is often sold in stores - a jumping grasshopper. The body of a small jumper is made of green plastic, on the abdomen there is a round rubber suction cup. And the long legs are bent from elastic steel wire.

jump ring

A toy grasshopper is placed on the bottom of the plate and pressed on it from above. Steel legs bend, move around on a plate, and the grasshopper presses its abdomen against a smooth surface. In this case, the suction cup is sucked.

Now you can let go of the grasshopper. It remains in the same position sometimes for several minutes. But gradually air penetrates under the suction cup, it keeps getting weaker... Fuck! With a loud click, the grasshopper breaks away from the plate and jumps a good meter, or even higher! A nervous person will shudder in order, especially if he has already managed to forget about the grasshopper and is distracted by something.

Why is the toy grasshopper jumping anyway? Yes, because his legs are straightened. You bent them, and the suction cup held them in a curved position. The legs tend to straighten up, straighten out. And as soon as the sucker lets go, they immediately straighten out. Click! The grasshopper takes off into the air.

A similar experiment can be done with a rubber ring cut from a bicycle or car inner tube. Sometimes such rings can be found ready-made; they are put on special "fastened" bottle caps. The outer diameter of the ring is 20 mm, the diameter of the hole is 8 mm.

jump ring

Twist the ring, inserting part of its circumference through the hole in the middle, and put it on the table. After a few seconds, the ring will straighten up, so abruptly that it jumps 20-30 cm up. The reason here is the same as in the experiment with the toy grasshopper. Rubber - compressed, bent, twisted - tends to regain its shape. It gradually "gets out" from the middle of the ring and finally straightens. Rubber, like steel, has the ability to recover its shape. This property is called elasticity.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Smell left and right 03.04.2000

As psychologists from the University of California (USA) have shown, the perception of smell depends on which nostril to inhale it.

Thirty-two volunteers were given eight common scents to smell, including lemon and mint. The subjects had to answer questions about the pleasantness or unpleasantness of the smell and what it actually smells like. The snuff was taken first with one nostril, then the other. It turned out that the right nostril tends to evaluate odors more positively than the left. But the left nostril more accurately determines the origin of the smell.

Experimenters believe that the differences found are associated with long-known differences in the activity of the two hemispheres of the brain. Each nostril sends signals to its own hemisphere. The left is more rational, reasonable, the right is more emotional. In accordance with this, the nostrils evaluate odors.
