Why are koalas capable of making very loud and low sounds?

The sound made by mammals is produced in the larynx by the passage of air through the vocal folds. The larger the size and weight of the folds, the lower the sound can be, which is why small animals usually squeak and are not able to trumpet like elephants. The only exception are koalas - during the mating season, males can attract females with very loud and low sounds up to 27 Hz. They succeed in this due to an additional pair of vocal cords located at the confluence of the nasopharynx and oropharynx and significantly exceeding the size and weight of the laryngeal folds.

Who made the first engine?

An engine is a unit that converts energy, usually heat, into mechanical work. For a long time, people worked by hand before the engine came to the rescue. At first they used the power of animals. Then they learned to use the power of the wind as a source of energy, which inflated the sails and turned the windmills. The mill was a kind of engine, pumping water and grinding grain. The energy of the falling water did the work of turning the water wheels.

Our entire civilization began to change when people learned to use heat as a source of energy in an engine. The first fact that the heat obtained from a fire was used to drive an engine took place about 2000 years ago. The Greek philosopher Heron made the first steam engine. However, he was too small to do any work.

In 1705, the Englishman Thomas Newcomen invented the steam engine. It was used to pump water from coal mines. However, the engine consumed a lot of fuel. In the XNUMXth century, James Watt made an improved engine. He came up with valves that worked so that no one had to stand by and operate them. The valves automatically caused the pistons to rise and fall.

In 1803, Robert Fulton used a Watt steam engine as a steamboat propulsor. In 1820, George Stephenson built a steam engine in England. The steam engine was very heavy, since the combustion of fuel took place in a furnace located separately from the steam boiler.

The gasoline engine, which was developed by the German Nicholas Otto in 1878, was the first step towards solving the problem of weight. This engine did not need a separate firebox and was much lighter than a steam engine of the same power.

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. When the cyberpunk movement was in vogue in the 80s and early 90s, it seemed to everyone that various chips in the brains, implants and other electronics sewn directly into the body were a matter of the near future. As it turned out, people are still not too willing to introduce artificial objects into their bodies, and the topic of implants for some time left the front pages of scientific journals, but not for long, and recently DARPA announced the creation of new implants implanted in the brain to improve memory.

During a conference held in St. Louis, a DARPA spokesperson said that several dozen people who had already received artificial implants that delivered directed electrical discharges to specific areas of the brain showed significant improvements in memory tests.

The goal of the study, which is part of DARPA's Active Memory Recovery Program, is to allow scientists to read and interpret the brain activity involved in the formation and activation of memories, and to predict when a person begins to remember something incorrectly. In this case, electrodes can be used to provide directed electrical discharges to groups of cells responsible for memory storage, making it more accessible as a result.

Patients who agreed to wear implants were implanted during brain surgery that did not involve memory loss. Surgeons have inserted small electrodes into regions of the brain responsible for declarative memories—that is, those by which we remember events, times, places, or lists of objects—as well as regions involved in spatial memory and orientation.

According to preliminary results, the researchers were able not only to record and interpret memory-saving cues, but also to improve patients' ability to remember entire lists of objects.
