Why is Star Wars Movie Day celebrated on May 4th?

The most famous quote from the movie "Star Wars" - "May the Force be with you" - in English sounds like "May the Force be with you". This pun can also be understood as "May the 4th be with you" ("May 4th with you"). That is why Star Wars Day is celebrated on the 4th of May by Star Wars fans.

What are meteors made of?

Perhaps you had to watch the picture when one of the stars, suddenly falling from the sky, rushed to the earth. For a long time, these shooting stars remained a mystery to people. In fact, these objects have nothing to do with real stars and are meteors. Today, they have been studied quite well by astronomers who believe that meteors are fragments of comets.

When comets break into millions of small and large pieces, the latter continue to move in the form of "swarms", or meteor showers. These meteor showers or individual especially large meteors move in space in constant orbits. Most meteors are small, but some can weigh several tons. Passing through the earth's atmosphere, they usually burn out completely, and only the largest manage to reach the earth's surface.

A meteor that hits the ground is called a meteorite. The largest of them, weighing 60-70 tons, was found in Africa and still lies at the site of its fall.

There are two main types of meteorites. Those belonging to the former consist mainly of iron and nickel. They are called metal meteorites. The composition of others includes mainly various minerals and they look like stone blocks burnt by a flame. Such meteorites are called stone, or aeromets. As a rule, both types of meteorites have a black crust on the outside - the result of the strong heating they experienced as they passed through the atmosphere.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

The ability to focus helps to achieve long-term goals 04.09.2017

Canadian scientists conducted a study of the relationship between people's ability to concentrate on the current task and the ability to complete the task. Pretty predictably, those who can maintain focus in daily life are more likely to demonstrate resilience and even passion in achieving their long-term goals.

"Those who are often unable to focus on their tasks - for example, making plans for the weekend instead of listening to a lecturer in class - tend to have more fleeting aspirations," the researchers note. "We have shown that maintaining concentration for several hours and days indicates the presence and long-term purposefulness.

The researchers' findings came from three separate studies. In the first two studies, the surveys measured "mind wandering", inattention, and toughness of character in 280 participants. In a third study, 105 graduate students were asked to report their mind behavior during class and then fill out questionnaires to measure their persistence.

Persistence is a personality trait that is associated with continued interest in and commitment to long-term goals and is designed to predict career and educational success, regardless of other characteristics, including intelligence.

It remains to be explored further whether people who would like to mitigate the effects of their mind wandering can achieve this through certain mental exercises, such as meditation.
