Why Liverpool, having won the Champions League, could only defend the title by exception?

Liverpool Football Club won the 2004-2005 Champions League, but finished only fifth in the English Premier League, despite the fact that at that time England had the maximum possible four places in the Champions League. UEFA rules allowed the club to defend the title in the main European tournament, even if it did not break into it through the national championship, but the English Football Association categorically refused to deprive the 4th-place Everton of the right to participate and give it to Liverpool. Under public pressure, UEFA made an exception and allowed Liverpool to play from the very first qualifying round. The club successfully passed the selection and became a member of the group stage of the League. In 2013, UEFA changed the regulations, increasing the maximum places from one country to five in the event of a recurrence of such collisions.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

You can love a caring robot 25.07.2013

Scientists have done an interesting study on robot/human interaction and have come to the conclusion that our friendly attitude is sometimes nothing more than a conditioned reflex to care.

Of course, this is not a quote from scientists who have diplomatically circumvented the ethical aspects of human behavior. In the course of the study, scientists from the University of Pennsylvania only studied how people relate to the Nao humanoid robot, developed by the French company Aldebaran Robotics, in various situations. The robot is quite complex, has facial expressions and can perform various functions, such as helping a person with simple household chores.

Scientists conducted an experiment in which people interacted with the robot in two ways: first, people were asked to help Nao calibrate his eyes, and then vice versa - Nao "attentively" looked into people's eyes, like a doctor, and gave advice on improving vision.

The participants then described their feelings for Nao. As a result, it turned out that when people receive help from the robot, they perceive the robot as a useful companion, and if you have to help the robot, maintain and configure it, then Nao was already treated as an annoying machine. In the first case, the attitude of people towards the robot was extremely positive: there was more trust, the robot seemed smarter and, in the eyes of people, acquired human qualities. It is the robot assistant that a person could fall in love with, for example, as a pet and even more as a friend.

At the same time, a robot that needs to be constantly "poked around" with, like with an old car, does not evoke any sentimental feelings, and in the eyes of people, such a robot remains a soulless machine.

It turns out that a demonstration of caring for oneself is perceived by a person as an undoubted sign of intelligence, care and other useful social qualities - and it doesn’t matter if this care is from another person or a machine, theoretically a person is able to fall in love with a robot that brings him a lot of benefits. In a sense, this is a demonstration of the exceptional egocentrism of people, but, fortunately, robots do not yet evaluate the moral qualities of the representatives of mankind.
