Drone with visual navigation like birds and insects

A team of researchers from the University of Queensland, Australia, are developing a drone inspired by biology: a drone that can find its way and locate itself like birds and flying insects. According to scientists, drones will be able to do their job without human intervention, radar and, possibly, in the future, without satellite navigation.

Researchers are studying the flight techniques of budgerigars and bees, applying their findings to drone control programs.

"We are studying how these small airborne creatures - bees and birds - use their vision to avoid collisions, fly safely through narrow passages, control their height above the ground, and so on," says Prof. Mandiyam Srinivashan. that the size and architecture of the brains of insects and birds are very different, but when it comes to flight control, their navigational apparatus works very efficiently.The brain of a bee weighs a tenth of a milligram, and the number of neurons in it is incomparably smaller than ours.However, insects easily find his route 10 km from his hive in search of food.

Studying their behavior can reveal to us some of the basic principles of visual navigation that are inherent not only to them, but also to people. Such drones could be incredibly useful for applications in surveying, rescue operations, security, and so on."
