What is gum?

Gum (the resinous secretion of plants), or gum, can be used for a variety of purposes, more important than just providing you with chewing gum. And, of course, there are a great many types of gum. One of these species, the so-called "gum arabic" (gum arabic), is used for the manufacture of candy, medicines and glue, as well as in the manufacture of silk.

Like most natural resins, gum is obtained from plants as a thick, sticky liquid that hardens in air and dissolves in water. Gum arabic is isolated by some types of acacias growing in Africa, Australia and Asia. It is sold in the form of transparent yellow or reddish pieces.

Some types of gum do not dissolve in water, but absorb it, forming a soft, sticky, gelatinous mass. Such gum is called "dragon gum" (dragon gum), which is used for the production of cough tablets and for fabric processing. Another important type of gum is cherry gum, which is used to starch straw in the manufacture of straw hats and other items.

Other types of gum are plum, peach, spruce, rubber. Rubber is obtained from gum trees and is used to make chewing gum. All these types of gums are used to produce inks, textiles, paper, medicines. Some of the highest quality varieties are used in medical and scientific laboratories for culture work. Most often, the gum is harvested during the dry season and brought to the market in the form of "noodles" or "tears".

Chemically, gum is made up of acid molecules linked to sugar molecules. In addition to pure gum, which we talked about, there is also stone resin. It is also obtained from plants, but differs from pure gum in that it does not completely dissolve in water. The two best-known types of this resin are frankincense and myrrh. These are highly fragrant substances and are used to produce perfumes and essences.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Doubling the capacitance of supercapacitors 12.11.2019

Lamborghini and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) summed up the first results of their joint work and spoke about the achievements in the field of supercapacitors.

In three years, an Italian automaker and an American university and research center have managed to develop an innovative synthetic material that will form the basis of a new generation of supercapacitors.

The material, which is currently being patented, was synthesized by the team of Professor Mircea Dink in the laboratories of the MIT Department of Chemistry. The novelty is based on the concept of metal-organic framework structures (MOF) and is characterized by a high specific surface area subject to electrical charge. It is stated that the development allows to double the energy density in comparison with currently existing supercapacitors.

The second development concerns new design principles for high-performance batteries. The team of Professor John Anastasios Hart of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology intends to create a battery that will combine strength and the ability to change its shape. This will allow future batteries to be built directly into the power structure of cars.
