Robot dog Spot took part in military exercises

17.04.2021

Boston Dynamics' four-legged Spot robot was used during military exercises conducted by the French army. It was used for reconnaissance.

The exercise was described as "raising students' awareness of the challenges of tomorrow", including "roboticizing the battlefield". Spot was one of several robots being tested by students at the French School of Combined Weapons to evaluate the usefulness of the robots on the battlefields of the future.

During the two-day exercise, the soldiers carried out a range of scenarios, including offensive operations with the capture of a crossroads, defensive operations by day and night, and combat operations in an urban environment. Each scenario was run using only humans, and then using humans and robots together to see what changed with the addition of machines.

One issue was Spot's battery life. Probably, during the exercises, its battery was discharged, and additionally it was necessary to solve the problem of replenishing the energy reserve.

The Spot robot is lightweight (31 kg), equipped with cameras and supports remote control. Thanks to its four legs, it can move freely in an urban environment, which can be problematic for wheeled robots.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Temperature sensor TMP117 29.01.2019

The new TMP117 precision sensor sets a new accuracy record for Texas Instruments digital temperature meters. The miniature integral sensor has an error of only +-0,1°C (max) in the temperature range from -20°C to +50°C. The sensor can be used in medical devices that meet the requirements of ASTM E1112 and ISO 80601. The 16-bit resolution allows temperature changes of 0.0078°C to be recorded.

The microcircuit has a digital two-wire I2C interface (SMBus-compatible) and additional interrupt and address lines. Built-in EEPROM-memory is used both for setting operation parameters and for user data. The low self-consumption reduces the effect of the instrument's self-heating and guarantees high accuracy at high measurement frequencies.

For non-medical applications, the TMP117 can be used as an alternative to platinum sensors (Platinum RTD). In the full temperature range from -55°C to +150°C, the measurement error does not exceed +-0,3°C. Operating voltage of the sensor from 1,8 V to 5,5 V

Each TMP117 chip is output tested during production and has a personal traceable NIST code.

Applications for TMP117:

medical equipment ASTM E1112 and ISO 80601-2-56;
control of environmental parameters;
personal wearable devices;
control of food transportation;
gas and heat meters;
equipment for testing and measurements;
replacement of RTD sensors: PT100, PT500, PT1000;
thermocouple cold junction compensation.
