Why do rabbits need a bright white tail?

Dirk Semmann, a professor at the University of Göttingen, developed a theory about why rabbits need a bright white tail. The predator chasing the rabbit focuses on this contrasting spot, ignoring the torso of the prey. When a rabbit makes a sharp and unpredictable turn, the predator often fails to quickly orient itself, and the chase ends in failure.

The hypothesis was confirmed by a computer game in which people were asked to "get into the skin" of a predator and press the keys corresponding to the change in the course of the rabbit running ahead. In the first variant, the players chased a solid-colored rabbit, in the second, they chased a rabbit with a white tail, in which case the number of errors increased significantly.

Who discovered Greenland?

If there is a place on earth that you would not even think of calling green, it is Greenland! Most of Greenland is covered by an ice shell, reaching more than 3000 meters thick in some places. Only the most resilient plants and animals can survive in such a climate on the edge of the ice sheet. Winters are very cold here, and summers are short and cool. Only small patches of land are covered with grass, heather and low flowering plants. Most of the ice-free surface is barren rocks covered with mosses and lichens.

Why then was this place called Greenland? Yes, for the same reason that an entrepreneur, wishing to attract buyers, gives the name "Pleasant Hill" or the like to a place that is really completely unattractive. In 982, an Icelander named Eric Thorvaldson ended up in southwestern Greenland. This stern man, better known as Red Eric, was exiled from Iceland for three years for killing a man. Erik spent three years in exile, exploring the western lands described by Icelandic sailors.

Three years later he returned to Iceland and told people about his research. He really wanted the settlers to rush to this country, so he gave it such an attractive name - Greenland! Today, less than 55 people live in Greenland, which is very small for such a large area. Most of the population lives on ice-free areas of the island on the southwest coast. Only 3260 people live in eastern Greenland and fewer than 800 live in the north.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The robot will determine the salinity of the dish 21.05.2022

Researchers at the University of Cambridge decided to train their robot chef in tasting skills: now he can taste the dish and see if it is salty enough.

In this way, a mechanical chef will be able to prepare dishes "to the individual taste" and at the same time pay attention to more details during cooking. In order for the robot to determine the taste of the dish, a special probe was attached to it, which acted as a salinity sensor.

During the experiment, the robot, which was trained to make an omelet, tried the dish nine times, tasting it. He also added tomatoes to the omelet.

Robots can rate dishes for saltiness much better than existing tasting methods, the study found.

Now the researchers hope that very soon robots will be able to compete with real chefs in the best restaurants. However, scientists also pursue socially significant goals: such robots will be able to help pensioners and people who do not have time to cook.
