Why do woodcocks sometimes imitate rain?

Earthworms are the basis of food for woodcocks. To get worms from the ground, birds sometimes resort to tricks: they trample on the ground, imitating rain, which attracts victims to the surface.

Who is Hippocrates?

In many medical institutions, on the wall we can see a document placed in a frame - the so-called Hippocratic Oath. This is the oath that doctors take after graduation. What kind of oath is this and who was Hippocrates? Before the era of scientific medicine in which we live, there was a type of treatment that depended entirely on sorcerers and healers. Then more intelligent medicine was developed in Ancient Egypt and India.

The ancient Egyptians were good diagnosticians. They had medical schools, they practiced in surgery. But the treatment of diseases was still in the hands of the Egyptian religion, with prayers, incantations and sacrifices as elements of the treatment.

Scientific medicine began in Greece when a group of people who were not priests became doctors. The most famous of them, Hippocrates, who lived around 400 BC. e., called the "father of medicine". His approach to medicine was scientific. He abandoned all superstitions, magic and spells. He and his students took careful notes of the cases they encountered.

Some of their observations are still valid today: fatigue for no reason means illness. When sleep overcomes a delirium, this is a good sign. If pain is felt in any part of the body and there is no reason for it, this is a disorder of mental activity. Hippocrates was convinced in his ideas of who a doctor was and what he should be. This is embodied in the Hippocratic Oath, which, along with many, contains the following ideas:

"I will follow such a system of behavior that, according to my ability and sound judgment, will only benefit patients, and I will refrain from everything harmful and evil. I will never give poisonous drugs, even if asked for it, nor will I give such advice ... Whatever I see or hear in connection with my profession or not, but if it cannot be spoken openly, if it concerns human life, I will not divulge, considering that it should be kept secret.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Ford Glare-Free Highbeam headlight system 22.03.2016

Ford has introduced the Glare-Free Highbeam electronic headlight control system. The complex provides maximum illumination without blinding other road users.

Glare-Free Highbeam is paired with Auto High Beam (automatic high/low beam switching) and Ford Dynamic LED with Adaptive Front Lighting (LED headlights with adaptive headlights). For the operation of the new complex, a camera is used, installed in the windshield area and designed to detect other vehicles, as well as cyclists.

With Glare-Free Highbeam, the headlights constantly adjust to changing road conditions. The system detects approaching or receding vehicles up to 800 meters away and smoothly dims individual beams of light, preventing drivers from being dazzled while maintaining maximum illumination of other areas.

The system takes into account a variety of indicators, such as the current speed of the vehicle, daylight, the distance to the vehicle ahead, and even the activity of the windshield wipers.

Glare-Free Highbeam is already available on the new Ford S-MAX and Galaxy models, and will soon be available on the Ford Edge crossover.
