Why did billionaire Peterffy need a robot that could type on a keyboard in the 1980s?

Billionaire Thomas Peterffy was the first stock market player who, back in the 1970s, thought about using computers to optimize transactions. At that time, brokers did all the transactions manually in the common room, so Peterffy engineers developed tablets, but they were too slow and did not bring any effect. In the late 1980s, when the NASDAQ exchange players were already entering all commands through the computer, his team illegally connected the exchange terminal to their machine with the automatic trading program according to given algorithms. After the prohibition of such an innovation, Peterffy instructed engineers to make a robot capable of typing the necessary commands on the terminal's keyboard.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What was the first human invention to break the sound barrier?

Whip.

The whip was invented in China 7000 years ago, but until the invention of instant photography in 1927, it never occurred to anyone that its “click” was not just a hit of a leather strap on the handle, but also a miniature supersonic clap.

The click accompanies the loop that forms when you swing the whip hard. The loop runs the entire length of the whip and, as the skin tapers towards the tip, accelerates as it moves, reaching speeds more than ten times its original speed. The "click" itself occurs when the loop breaks the sound barrier at about 1194 km/h.

It is officially accepted that the American pilot Chuck Yeager was the first to break the sound barrier on an experimental fighter "Bell X-l" in 1947. In 1948, he also reached a speed of 1540 km / h at an altitude of 21 m - this figure still ranks ninth among manned flights of all times and peoples.

The world record still belongs to the X-15A aircraft - 6389 km / h at an altitude of 31 m, it happened in 200.

The maximum speed that a person has ever traveled is 39 km/h. The Apollo 897 manned spacecraft reached it in 10.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Microwave weapons against drones 13.05.2022

The United States successfully tested a new weapon. We are talking about microwave weapons, which are intended to destroy drones.

The demonstration was conducted by specialists from the Pentagon's Joint Office for Combating Small Drones (JCO).

Epirus, Raytheon Technologies and Leonardo DRS also presented their anti-drone systems. All of them are capable of destroying drones with focused electromagnetic pulses.

As part of the testing, the range of destruction of promising complexes and the time required to destroy the target were determined.
