Why is there a sledgehammer at the combat post of the commander of the duty forces of the Strategic Missile Forces?

In 1980, an inspectorate visited the central command post of the strategic missile forces of the USSR, and the general on duty was asked what he intended to do if, after the command to launch the missiles, the combination lock of the safe with military documents did not open after three attempts. The officer replied that in this case he kept a sledgehammer behind the safe, with which he would knock down the lock. Most members of the commission were outraged by this answer, but the chief of the eighth directorate of the General Staff convinced them that this combat order should be delivered to the troops without delay and the presence of a fallback in the form of a sledgehammer was justified. At the same time, the sledgehammer was legalized, and since then it has always been in the post of commander of the duty forces of the Strategic Missile Forces.

What toy did American manufacturers fail to replace the teddy bear with?

William Taft became the 27th President of the United States, succeeding Theodore Roosevelt. Seeing the huge success of the "Teddy Bear" teddy bear, named after the former head of state, the toy makers decided to capitalize on creating the hero, now in honor of Taft. Factories produced thousands of plush possums called "Billy Possums" and a massive media campaign was launched to promote them with the emphasis that soon all American children would throw away the teddy bears and play only with possums. However, all this turned out to be a complete failure: the demand for "Billy Possum" did not last even a year, and "Teddy Bear" only strengthened its popularity over time.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

HPP845 - digital and analog humidity sensors TE Connectivity 10.09.2019

The HPP845 series (HTU21D(F)/HTU20D(F)) are TE Connectivity's "plug and play" temperature and humidity combo sensors for OEM applications where reliable and accurate measurements are required. Each internal sensor is calibrated and tested individually. The microcircuit has a unique serial number that can be read by a special command. To improve the reliability of the transmitted data, the CRC-8 checksum functionality is supported.

An additional membrane filter (optional) protects the sensors from dust and water ingress while maintaining a fast response time. This membrane provides protection in accordance with the IP67 standard.

Digital sensors provide calibrated, linearized signals via an I?C interface. The resolution of digital humidity sensors can be changed on command (from 8/12 bits up to 12/14 bits for RH/T).

The analog version of the sensor outputs a PWM signal with a base frequency of 120 Hz on the SDA line. The SCL pin is used as a data type switch input - humidity or temperature (SCK up - RH, SCK down - T ). Measurements are taken twice per second. The PWM output signal can be easily converted to DC voltage with a low pass filter.
