Why is there a red and white sign at the door of barbershops?

Do you know why there is a red and white pole at the door of barbershops in the UK as a symbol of the profession? What does this sign have to do with the profession of a barber?

Today, he really has nothing to do with this profession. But a long time ago, in addition to cutting and shaving, barbers did other things - in particular, "bled". The patient allowed the barber to release "bad blood" from his hand, as people believed that by getting rid of it, the body overcomes the disease.

For this operation to be successful, the patient had to hold on tightly to a special post. Each barber always had a column and bandages at hand. When the barber was not using the bar, he would put it outside the door of the barbershop, which meant that the barber was very good at bleeding.

As time went on, people began to believe that it was inappropriate to use bandages in such unsanitary conditions. Since then, barbers have applied white and red stripes on the posts in a spiral, which was associated with bandages red with blood.

This symbol has taken root so much that the posts are at the door of every hairdresser to this day!

By the way, people began to give "tips" to hairdressers. The visitor paid for the work as much as he could, or what he thought the work was worth. This form of payment spread throughout England, and soon there were boxes in hotels and taverns where people put money for services. To make people more willing to give money, they wrote on the boxes: "For the speed of service." The initial letters of these words in English began to mean "tip".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Fullerenes can be dangerous 14.08.2004

Preliminary studies by American hygienists suggest that fullerenes - round hollow molecules consisting of several dozen carbon atoms - can be harmful to the body.

Fullerenes were first obtained in 1985; they can be used in microelectronics, as an additive to lubricants, in fuel cells. Pharmacists want to use these nanometer-sized beads (a nanometer is one thousandth of a micrometer) as supermicroscopic pills, filling them with drugs and injecting them into the patient's bloodstream. They are also used in cosmetics, filling with cosmetics.

However, experiments on fish conducted at the University of Dallas (USA) have shown that fullerenes can accumulate in liver cells and brain neurons, changing the functioning of genes in these cells and damaging cell membranes.

The degree of toxicity of ultramicroscopic carbon balls is estimated as average between nickel and benzopyrene, a carcinogen found in tobacco smoke and car exhaust. If you add fullerenes to the water with daphnia floating in it at a concentration of only 0,8 milligrams per liter, after two days half of the daphnia dies.

According to unpublished data of other researchers, fullerenes are also toxic to rodents.
