Has Paris always been a city of dreams?

There was a time when European kings were looking for an alliance with Kievan Rus - a powerful state, a center of trade and culture. In 1044, King Henry I of France sent an embassy to Kyiv - to ask for the hand of Princess Anna, daughter of the Grand Duke of Kyiv Yaroslav the Wise. The prince did not immediately agree, but in April 1049 a wedding procession finally passed through the streets of Paris.

Here is what Anna wrote to her father shortly after her arrival: “To what barbarous country did you send me!

However, Anna was true to her duty as Queen of France. After the death of Henry I, while their son Philip was still young, Anna took over the government. Her signature is on many state documents next to the crosses put by illiterate royal nobles.

And two years later, the Queen of France was kidnapped from the castle of Senlis, where her residence was, a descendant of Charlemagne, Count Raul de Crepy de Valois, and they were married in the church of the castle of Crepy by a local priest. Apparently, the count managed to win the love of a Kiev woman. Soon she returned to court with her new husband and again took part in public affairs.

Many such documents have been preserved, on which her signature is next to the signature of Philip I: "Anne, mother of the king of France." It can be seen that the Kyiv princess was really distinguished by her outstanding abilities. The Pope himself wrote to her: "We hear with great joy that you are fulfilling your royal duties with commendable zeal and a wonderful mind ..."

Which European monarchical dynasty was revered by Buddhists as the earthly incarnation of a female bodhisattva?

In Buddhism, Tara is a female bodhisattva who has achieved perfection and liberation, but refused to enter nirvana out of compassion for people. After Catherine II established the post of Pandita-Khambo-Lama - the head of the Buddhists of Eastern Siberia and Transbaikalia, the Buryat lamas recognized her as the earthly incarnation of White Tara - one of the hypostases of Tara, who is a healer and bestows good luck. Since then, Buddhists have revered every ruler of the Russian state in the form of White Tara, regardless of whether he was a woman or a man.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Magnetic system that converts heat into mechanical motion 16.11.2017

Researchers at the University of Exeter have created a microscopic magnetic system that is capable of producing mechanical motion using thermal energy from the environment. This new principle of direct conversion of energy from one type to another can be used to ensure the operation of various nanomachines, microrobots, and the operation of new types of sensors and next-generation information storage devices can be based on this principle.

The basis of the new magnetic system is a fairly common mechanism known as the "ratchet". This thermal ratchet is made of a very unusual material, which can be called the term "artificial spin ice" (artificial spin ice), which includes a lot of tiny nanomagnets, nanoparticles of their permalloy alloy, an iron-nickel alloy.

In addition to thermal energy, such a system is capable of converting into motion the energy of a magnetic field, which leads to a shift in the magnetization vectors of individual nanomagnets. In this case, this displacement has an annular character and rotates in one of two possible directions. “We tried to figure out why it works at all for a long time,” says Professor Gino Hrkac, “And only at the very end we realized that an asymmetric energy potential is created at the opposite edges of the thermal ratchet, which is reflected in the distribution of the total magnetic field of the set nanomagnets. And this asymmetry causes the region of magnetization to rotate in one of two directions."

To study the characteristics of the magnetic state of a thermal ratchet, scientists used X-rays and the so-called dichroic magnetic effect (magnetic dichroic effect). And the actual measurements were made using the SLS X-ray source of the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, and the Advanced Light Source of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA.

As mentioned above, the new effect, which operates at the level of conditionally two-dimensional magnetic materials, can be used in various nanoscale devices, including magnetic and thermal nanomotors, sensors, etc. In addition, the new effect can become the basic principle of operation of new information storage devices, the bits of which are recorded in magnetic cells by rapidly local heating them with laser light pulses.
