Why is the leatherback turtle not a sea turtle?

The leatherback turtle lives in the sea and may well qualify for the title of sea turtle, but the fact is that it is not related to the rest of the sea turtles. Zoologists call sea turtles the closely related green turtle, hawksbill, loggerhead, riddley and olive turtle. But leathery is not called that.

It differs from sea turtles in that its shell does not fuse with the skeleton. It is thin and light, consists of many small bone plates and is covered with leather. True, the paws, like those of sea turtles, have turned into flippers in the leathery ones.

Leatherback turtles never form large herds. They live in warm seas and oceans. Like sea turtles, they come out in certain places along the coast to procreate.

Leatherback turtles are inhabitants of the open ocean. Outside of the breeding season, it is an incorrigible vagrant, swimming more than a hundred kilometers a day. They feed on everything that comes across edible: jellyfish, squid, fish, algae.

Why are we dancing?

Children, even before they can speak, and even without seeing anyone dancing, often find expression to their emotions through rhythmic movements. Do animals dance? There are birds that perform group movements in unison, such as circling, tilting, moving forward and backward.

At first, ancient man danced instinctively. He discovered that repetitive rhythmic movements evoke pleasant feelings, affect consciousness and emotions. This gave the dancing a magical power. And when a person wanted to evoke these pleasant feelings again, he began to dance. This led to the development of group dance.

And today there are tribes that are at a low level of development, which dance to attract "magical" power. There are ritual military and hunting dances, wedding and funeral dances, during planting and harvesting. These ritual dances were an integral part of religious ceremonies. They danced in the temples of ancient Egypt. The ancient Jews danced in the performance of their religious rites. The Bible says that King David danced in front of the Ark of the Covenant, expressing his religious feelings.

The Greeks developed dance to such an extent that it ceased to be part of religious ceremonies, but turned into a source of entertainment, became the basis for the development of theater and drama. The word "orchestra" was first used to refer to a dance floor in a Greek theatre.

The Greeks also used dance for the physical training of soldiers. The Romans copied the Greeks, but their dances became wild and distorted. At first, Christians used dances in worship rituals, but after the Romans perverted the dance, it was banned from church services. In the countries of the East, they also resorted to the help of dance to express religious feelings.

One of the most significant forms of dance originated in the mists of time - it's folk dance. A dance created by people of a certain religion, which has become traditional and passed down from generation to generation. Modern dances originate in folk and ballroom dance, which came from the halls of England.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Intelligence and climate 05.08.2011

The climate of the area affects the intelligence of the population. This conclusion was made by American psychologists from the University of Missouri.

There is an inverse relationship between the average annual temperature and the IQ of the population of different US states: the colder the climate, the smarter the population. These data confirm a pattern observed back in 2006, when appropriate intelligence tests were conducted in 129 countries around the world: in colder countries, the IQ is on average higher than in warm ones.

The reasons for this connection are not clear, but they suggest that in the harsh conditions of the northern countries, the population was subjected to natural selection "for intelligence".
