How many types of insects exist in nature? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? How many types of insects exist in nature? What is the word "insect" associated with in the minds of most people? These are usually harmful insects such as flies, mosquitoes, moths and beetles. Or they think of ants, bees and wasps, and attractive insects like butterflies. And if you ask them to think of some other insects, they might name a couple more species. But do you know how many species of insects actually exist? It will probably surprise you very much, but there are anywhere from two to three million different species! Scientists have described only six hundred twenty-five thousand species. And it is practically unlikely that every single species of insects that exist today will ever be described. There is no other class of living beings in the world that even slightly approaches insects in terms of the number of species. If we try to count how many insects there are in the world, the number will be so large that the human mind cannot imagine it! The only way to start counting the number of insects in any area is to count all the insects that can be found in fertile, moist soil in an area of one square meter. There will be about five hundred to two thousand of them. This means that in just one hectare of fertile soil, about eight million insects live in comfort and prosperity! Keep in mind, however, that if a person without special training in observing insects (and this is most of us) tries to count insects on this very hectare, then he will only notice a butterfly, a bumblebee or a beetle accidentally flying here. But most insects are so small that the human eye is unable to see them. Many of them are microscopic in size. But, most importantly, among this huge number of insects living on one hectare of land, there are only a few thousand that cause trouble to a person, and he is trying to somehow control their numbers. Taking into account all these factors, you will understand that a person actually lives on the planet of insects, but at the same time he has no idea either about the existence of many of them, or about their true number! Despite all the diversity in the appearance of insects, they have two characteristics in common: their body is divided into three parts and they usually have six legs. This is true for most of them, but there are exceptions. Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: Why did billionaire Peterffy need a robot that could type on a keyboard in the 1980s? Billionaire Thomas Peterffy was the first stock market player who, back in the 1970s, thought about using computers to optimize transactions. At that time, brokers did all the transactions manually in the common room, so Peterffy engineers developed tablets, but they were too slow and did not bring any effect. In the late 1980s, when the NASDAQ exchange players were already entering all commands through the computer, his team illegally connected the exchange terminal to their machine with the automatic trading program according to given algorithms. After the prohibition of such an innovation, Peterffy instructed engineers to make a robot capable of typing the necessary commands on the terminal's keyboard.
