What do dolphins drink?

Dolphins don't drink at all.

The dolphin is like an animal in the desert without access to fresh water. It receives liquid from food (consisting mostly of squid and fish), as well as burning fats in its body, as a result of which water is released.

Dolphins are the same whales; The largest representative of the dolphin family is the predatory killer whale, which is also commonly called the killer whale. Interestingly, the English name is a reverse permutation of the original Spanish asesina-ballenas meaning "whale killer". And they were named so because flocks of killer whales often attack larger whales and kill them.

Did not contribute to the reputation of killer whales and Pliny the Elder. In the words of a Roman historian, the killer whale "can neither be depicted nor described properly, except as some kind of huge carcass, armed with merciless teeth."

A dolphin's mouth has up to 230 teeth, more than any other mammal. Despite this circumstance, the dolphin swallows the fish whole. He needs his teeth solely in order to grab prey.

Dolphins sleep in a very unusual way: during sleep, they turn off one half of the brain and the opposite eye. The other half of the brain is awake at the same time, and the second eye remains alert in case of predators or obstacles, not forgetting to give commands to the dolphin to rise to the surface in time to take a breath of air. Two hours later, the sides change places. This procedure is called "logging".

Dolphins have been working for the US Navy since the days of the Vietnam War, where they faithfully performed their duty. About XNUMX dolphins and XNUMX other marine mammals currently serve in the US Navy. Most recently, six sea lions were assigned to the US military contingent in Iraq, where they are serving.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, rumors spread that thirty-six US Navy specially trained attack dolphins armed with special toxic darts were released as a result. This whole story seems to us another "duck", not to mention the fact that "combat" dolphins are not trained to attack - only to search for objects.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where and when were 150 people shot by soldiers dressed as Santa Claus?

One of Africa's most notorious dictators was Francisco Macias Nguema, who ruled Equatorial Guinea from 1968 to 1979. As a result of the terror unleashed by him, about a quarter of the country's population was killed. Executions were not always banal - for example, on Christmas Day 1975, 150 of Nguema's opponents were shot by soldiers dressed as Santa Claus. Mary Hopkin's song "Those Were the Days" to the tune of the Russian romance "Darling long" was played in the background.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Eternal microgravure on diamond 05.03.2005

Scientists from the Institute for Solid State Physics and Materials Science in Dresden (Germany) have developed a way to store documents in supermicroscopic form indefinitely.

On a diamond film deposited from a carbon plasma, text or a picture is engraved with a tunneling microscope needle. When a voltage is applied to the needle, the diamond film is bombarded by electrons flowing from the needle. Where a jet of electrons hits the film, the diamond turns into graphite. The density of graphite is less than that of diamond, so at this point a tubercle of carbon atoms is obtained.

Ten thousand of these tubercles can form a square image with a side of 1,2 micrometers, for the reproduction of which, again, it is necessary to scan it with the needle of a tunneling microscope. With such a density of information recording, one postcard can contain photographs of all six billion inhabitants of the Earth.

The authors of the method claim that due to the exceptional stability of graphite and diamond, records can be stored for many millennia.
