Stories about crusaders who, having snapped a chastity belt on their beloved wife and hanging the key around their neck, jump to war are typical stories invented in the XNUMXth century for the needs of readers eager for spicy stuff.

There is no reliable evidence that chastity belts were practiced in the early Middle Ages. The first drawing of one of these devices dates back to the beginning of the 1405th century. Konrad Kaiser's book "Bellifortis" ("Military Fortifications", XNUMX), which describes the military equipment of those times, was published much later than the end of the last crusade. It is in it that there is a picture that depicts "strong iron pantaloons" - the subject of the toilet of Florentine matrons.

The figure clearly shows the key, which means that it was not the knight at all, but the lady who controlled access to the device that protected girlish chastity from the unwanted attention of Florentine dandies.

A large number of "medieval" chastity belts kept in museum collections raised serious doubts about their authenticity and were eventually removed from display. As in the case of the "medieval" instruments of torture, most of them were made in Germany in the XIX century in order to satisfy the "professional" interest of collectors.

The nineteenth century also saw an increase in sales and completely new "chastity belts" - though no longer for women.
