Pasternak B.L.
Pasternak B.L.

Phraseologism: Don't sleep, don't sleep, artist, don't indulge in sleep.

Meaning: It is jokingly-ironically quoted as a way to cheer up, to encourage action.

Origin: From the poem "Night" (1956) by the poet Boris Leonidovich Pasternak (1890-1960): "Do not sleep, do not sleep, artist, // Do not indulge in sleep, // You are a hostage of eternity // Captured by time."

Random phraseology:

Servant of the people.

Meaning:

MP and other civil servant.

Origin:

The expression goes back to antiquity. The ancient Greek orator and publicist Isocrates (436-338 BC) in his work "Areopagetic" (c. 354 BC) wrote: "The people should appoint representatives of power, [...] and people who have sufficient leisure, should devote themselves to public affairs as servants of the people" (translated by K. M. Kolobova). This expression became popular thanks to I.V. Stalin (1878-1953), who at the pre-election meeting at the Bolshoi Theater (December 11, 1937) said: "A deputy must know that he is a servant of the people." Later, this expression was repeatedly used on Soviet-era election posters.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Microbial colonies on jewelry 28.10.2020

Perhaps everyone knows that microbes and viruses can live on various surfaces, including jewelry. Many people often forget to clean their accessories without thinking about how much bacteria can build up there. American scientists decided to visually show what jewelry looks like if you do not clean them for one week. The results of the experiment were shared by the Dailymail edition.

Researchers have proven that 400 times more bacteria can live on earrings, rings, watches and other accessories than on a toilet seat. Scientists studied the surface of jewelry and found up to 21 thousand different bacteria on them. The most dangerous of them was Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause sepsis or pneumonia.

On the ring, scientists found more than 500 bacterial colonies. Among them was black mold, the spores of which can enter the body through the respiratory tract. But on the earrings, a "wax" bacterium was found, which can cause severe poisoning. There were no fewer microbes on the watch than on accessories - up to 21 thousand colonies.
