Which city's mayor beat his rivals in SimCity before winning the election?

During the 2002 Warsaw mayoral campaign, candidates were asked to compete in city management in SimCity 3000. To do this, a map of Warsaw was simulated with some assumptions, and each participant was given the same amount in game currency. True, most of the participants preferred to entrust the development of the computer city to their team members, while they themselves communicated with the audience at that time, but this situation just well reflects the essence of the mayor's work. The best result was achieved by Lech Kaczynski, who then won the elections and was subsequently elected President of Poland.

What is the economic downturn?

What is a depression, or crisis, in the economy? This is a period of time in the history of the state when things go wrong. It affects all sections of the population, from the banker to the laboratory assistant to the storekeeper. Workers are losing their jobs in factories. As a result, the volume of trade decreases. Stores require less goods, earn less money. This damages banks. The entire economy is suffering. This is depression. If the same thing happens, but on a smaller scale, it is an economic recession.

People have to admit that there have been a series of economic ups and downs over the past 150 years. Everything happens in cycles: a rise is followed by a decline, and so on. Things seem to be going well, business is booming, people are happy. But then something happens, something is done wrong, some mistake is made, a recession sets in. After a while, things get better, the cycle begins again.

No one knows exactly what causes an economic recession or depression. There is no single explanation of this phenomenon accepted by all economists. Governments and businesses take steps to get out of depressions or recessions when they come, but there is no sure way out.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Artificial muscle fiber steak 17.03.2021

Scientists from the University of Tokyo have created an artificial steak: in the laboratory, they managed to grow the muscle fibers of cows. Prior to this, artificial meat was created only in the form of minced meat.

The new product, according to scientists, when cooked, tastes almost the same as natural.

The specialists managed to grow a sample of muscle tissue with a size of 1 cm2 and a thickness of several millimeters. The head of the study noted that at this stage the result is more like liquid minced meat than natural fibers, but when cooked, it tastes almost impossible to distinguish from real beef.

To grow artificial meat, the scientists used a technique that is used in regenerative medicine to restore lost muscle tissue: it is done by growing thin layers of muscle from stem cells on a special basis inside the body. Japanese biotechnologists applied the same approach to a stem cell culture planted on a polymeric hydrogel base. To accelerate the growth of muscle tissue, scientists periodically acted on the cells with an electric current.

World meat consumption is growing along with the population, which can lead to a protein crisis, since traditional animal husbandry creates a number of problems, including ethical ones, and also adversely affects the environment. Therefore, scientists are confident that the proposed method for reproducing muscle tissue will be useful for producing artificial meat steak on an industrial scale.
