What is energy?

You probably read in the newspapers that the most important task of scientists is to obtain atomic energy, which would serve man for peaceful purposes. That this has already been achieved is the greatest achievement of the human mind.

Albert Einstein put forward the theory of the relationship between matter and energy. In other words, he proved that matter can be converted into energy. It has changed our perception of the world around us. Matter turned out to be secondary: energy turned out to be the most important factor in the world.

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. This is what is behind the concept of force, which makes it possible for forces to exist. To understand this, let's take a car.

In order to set the engine in motion, force must be applied. It has to be obtained from somewhere. From energy. And where does the energy come from? It is obtained from gasoline during its combustion in cylinders. This energy sets in motion certain forces that impart movement to the mechanisms of the car. As a result, the engine works, and this is made possible thanks to energy.

There are two types of energy - potential and kinetic. Let's look at the potential first. In gasoline, electrical forces attract the molecules to each other. The energy stored in these molecules is potential energy. When gasoline is burned, this potential energy is released.

Another example of potential energy is a suspended load. Energy is stored in this cargo, we can release it when the cargo starts to fall down. Water at the edge of a waterfall or at the crest of a dam also has potential energy.

Now let's release the load or follow the water falling in the waterfall. They fall at a certain speed, doing work, this energy is called "kinetic energy". This is the energy received by a body moving at a certain speed. A falling body loses potential energy and gains kinetic energy. The magnitude of the two types of energy is equivalent. In reality, the total amount of energy in the universe always remains the same. We cannot destroy or recreate energy. When generating energy, we use the energy of falling water, coal, an atom, turning one type of energy into another.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How big can tortoises get?

The largest of the land turtles are elephant (or giant, gigantic) turtles (Geo-chelone elephantopus, or Testudo gigantea), preserved only on the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean and on the Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean.

Not so long ago, the mass of such turtles reached 400 kilograms, the shell length was 2 meters (reptiles grow throughout their lives, and the life expectancy of these giants is estimated at 100-150 and even 300 years).

In past centuries, these huge herbivorous turtles were mercilessly destroyed by sailors who filled the holds of their ships with live "canned meat", which did not even have to be fed, because, like all reptiles, they can do without food for a long time.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

shark constellation 16.08.2006

The biggest fish is the whale shark. A harmless creature that feeds on plankton reaches a length of 20 meters, which is larger than many whales.

Ichthyologists studying the life of such giants must somehow recognize individual individuals in order to monitor their behavior and movements. They tried to attach bright marks, ultrasonic beacons to the fins, but this is expensive, complicated and unreliable. Meanwhile, the skin of any shark is dotted with bright spots, individual for each individual, like human fingerprints.

Noticing that the skin of a shark looks like a starry sky, Australian ichthyologists borrowed a computer program from NASA astronomers designed to identify sections of the starry sky. A data bank of whale shark photographs is now being created, and they will soon be able to be identified by their pattern of spots.
