Did you know?

How fast is light moving?

How to say.

We often hear that the speed of light is constant, but this is not true. Light reaches its maximum speed of almost 300 km/s only in a complete vacuum.

In any other medium, the speed of light is very different from the maximum and is always below the figure that each of us knows by heart. Through diamonds, for example, light travels more than twice as slowly, at about 130 km/s.

Until recently, the most trifling officially recorded speed of light (through sodium at a temperature of minus 272 ° C) was a little more than 60 km / h - a racing bike is faster.

In 2000, the same group of scientists (from Harvard University) managed to bring light to a complete stop by pointing it at the "back" (Bose-Einstein condensate) of the chemical element rubidium.

Rubidium was discovered by the German chemist Robert Bunsen (1811 - 1899), who did not invent the Bunsen burner named after him.

Amazingly, the light is invisible.

The light itself cannot be seen, you can only see what it hits. A light beam in a vacuum incident perpendicular to the observer is absolutely invisible.

All this, of course, is very strange, but it is quite logical. If light were visible, it would form a kind of fog between our eyes and everything in front of us.

Darkness is no less a strange thing. It's not there, but you can't see anything through it.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did the poets not like Mayakovsky for writing poems with a ladder?

When Mayakovsky introduced his famous verse "ladder", fellow poets accused him of cheating - after all, poets were then paid for the number of lines, and Mayakovsky received 2-3 times more for poems of a similar length.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Underground pipe repair 07.03.2010

Leaky water pipes in the world's cities waste 88 billion liters of purified water every day, according to the World Bank. Experts consider it acceptable to lose 3500 liters of water per day per kilometer of main pipes. To cope with even such "small" losses, it is necessary either to change the entire system, or to reduce the water pressure in the water supply.

Israel has proposed a new way to deal with cracks in underground main pipes. The water in the area is turned off. A "coupling" of two pistons made of elastic material is launched into the pipe. Between them is a viscous solution of a special composition.

Water pressure drives this system through the pipe. When it crawls up to the crack, the pressure of water squeezes out a little repair mixture into the crack, which soon hardens. After that, it is necessary to wash the pipes and again let the water into the residential areas.

The method can also be applied to oil and gas pipelines.
