Can a male seahorse have babies?

Sometimes people who buy seahorses for home aquariums will say "the male is pregnant". There is a reason for such words, although this does not correspond to the truth. The seahorse is a very strange creature. Its head resembles that of a small pony, and its body resembles that of a dwarf dragon. It moves in the water in a standing position with the help of a single dorsal fin. But the seahorse is a fish.

There are more than 50 species of this fish that live in the temperate and tropical seas of the world. They have different sizes: from 5 to 30 cm. A feature of seahorses is taking care of their eggs. The female lays about 200 eggs. She places them in a pocket on the male's body just above the tail. After 40-50 days, the male opens this pocket and the baby seahorses come out of it. That is why people have the erroneous notion that the male gives birth to offspring. Even after the young hatch, they remain in their father's pouch for some time until they are old enough to take care of themselves.

Seahorses feed on small sea creatures and the eggs of other fish. They do not eat carrion. People have admired these fish since ancient times. Seahorses were carved on mummy tombs in Egypt. In ancient China, they were grown for medicinal purposes. In Italy, they were believed to bring good luck.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Does an ostrich have a voice?

From whichever side you look at the ostrich, it is a strange and wonderful bird. The ostrich is the largest bird, but it cannot fly. It uses its small wings to balance them while running fast. The head and neck of this bird are almost devoid of feathers. The long legs of an ostrich end in only two fingers. The plumage of the male is black or dark brown, with the exception of wing feathers and a white tail. The plumage of the female is much duller and shorter.

As you might guess, such a bird can hardly have a singing voice, but the ostrich does have a voice! Most of the year, ostriches emit only a loud, hissing sound, but during the mating season, they “cut through” a booming roar that is clearly audible even at a great distance. Three or four female ostriches lay their eggs in one shallow hole dug in the sand, and take turns incubating them, at night they are replaced by a male.

Ostrich eggs are the largest of those that are laid by living birds. The ostrich is very greedy. Its diet consists mainly of plants, berries and grains. And in order to better digest food, the ostrich sometimes swallows large stones, pieces of iron and other objects!

People breed ostriches for their magnificent feathers. The first plucking can be carried out even before the ostrich is one year old, and each time new feathers will grow in place of the plucked feathers.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Self-cleaning film repels bacteria 15.12.2019

A team of researchers from McMaster University (Canada) has developed a film that can repel all forms of bacteria, including those resistant to antibiotics. It can be used as packaging for food and medical instruments, as well as a protective coating for door handles and railings.

The new plastic surface is an improved form of conventional transparencies. The material is covered with microscopic "wrinkles", due to which substances - for example, a drop of water or blood - do not stick to the surface of the film, but bounce off it. This texture also prevents the formation of a biofilm of harmful bacteria.

The researchers tested the material using two forms of antibiotic-resistant bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The material demonstrated its repulsive ability by 87% in the case of the first pathogen, and by 84% in the case of the second. E. coli also failed to move to new material after it came into contact with another - infected - surface.
