Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

immune switch gene 19.12.2012

Researchers have discovered a key gene that is responsible for the functioning of the immune system. It turns out that when just one gene called Bcl11a is turned off, the cells of the adaptive immune system stop developing and fighting bacteria and other pathogens.

An adaptive immune system is very important because it protects a person from re-infection with various infectious diseases. It is thanks to this system that all vaccines are effective and many diseases, such as, for example, polio, are defeated. In addition, the immune system recognizes similar strains, such as influenza, and the disease with a new strain is easier. Finding a gene that can turn adaptive immunity on and off could be both a powerful cure and a deadly bioweapon.

Previously, scientists have learned that Bcl11a is essential for the development of certain immune cells in mouse embryos. In the new study, they looked at the role of this gene in adult mice. Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute knocked out the Bcl11a gene and studied the development of immune system cells. The scientists were surprised when they found that after the gene was switched off, the adaptive immune system stopped producing immune B, T and NK cells.

Thus, for the first time, scientists have found a single gene that must be active for the adaptive immune system to function. Thanks to this discovery, scientists will be able to understand how our immune system works, how to suspend its work or, on the contrary, activate it.

The exclusive function of the Bcl11a gene is due to the fact that it is responsible for the production of a protein, without which the progenitor cells of the adaptive immune system die. On the other hand, Bcl11a hyperactivity causes lymphoma - the most dangerous type of cancer. Bcl11a also plays a role in the development of oxygen-carrying red blood cells: in 2011, researchers had already demonstrated how knocking out the Bcl11a gene could cure sickle cell anemia in mice.

The discovery of the importance of the Bcl11a gene will allow for a variety of experiments, in particular the study of the behavior of human immunity in laboratory mice. In addition, the discovery may help develop effective methods of treating cancer. On the other hand, Bcl11a can also be used as a weapon: turning off this gene with a modified virus, for example, will make a person extremely susceptible to dozens of diseases that are considered relatively safe.
