What is plant soil?

There are many substances in the soil that create the conditions for plant growth. Soil is a mixture of organic and inorganic substances. The organic part consists of living organisms and the remains of once living organisms. The inorganic mixture is particles of rocks and minerals. Soil organic matter is called humus.

Humus separates densely packed rock particles, thus creating conditions for soil ventilation and easier water access. Humus also provides food for bacteria and other microorganisms in the soil. These microorganisms die, decompose, forming substances that the plant can absorb well. Therefore, humus is very important for soil fertility, it helps the plant to develop.

A large number of living beings live in the soil. Earthworms are very useful. They rake up the earth, loosen it, and thus improve it. Microorganisms living in the soil feed on particles of organic matter. It turns organic matter into minerals, gases and liquids. These waste products decompose further, and as a result, a new combination of basic elements is created.

Plants can use these substances for their growth. There are 10 elements necessary for plant growth. These are oxygen, hydrogen, carbon. They are present in both air and water. But you also need elements that the plant receives only from the soil. These are nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and sulfur.

What mistake led to the appearance of a mythical animal on the coat of arms of the Irkutsk region?

The old coat of arms of Irkutsk depicted a babr (as the Ussuri tiger used to be called) holding a sable in its mouth. In the decree of the Senate of 1878, a mistake was made in the description of the coat of arms - a beaver appeared instead of a babr. The artists had to add a large beaver tail and webbed hind legs to the babr, creating a new mythical animal.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Tigers and infrasound 05.08.2003

Zoologists from the Omaha Zoo (USA), having studied the vocal capabilities and hearing of different types of tiger, came to the conclusion that huge cats widely use infrasonic frequencies.

Low frequency sound is better distributed and heard from a distance. In the roar of the Amur tiger, the main energy falls on low sounds with a frequency of about 300 hertz with components lying in the infrasound region below 20 hertz. These frequencies pass better through the dense undergrowth that is common in tiger habitats. The researchers even measured the response of the tiger's brain to sounds of different frequencies by inserting electrodes into the brains of sedated Amur, Sumatran and Bengal tigers.

It turned out that the hearing of the tiger is most sensitive to sounds with a frequency of about 500 hertz (in humans - about 1000 hertz). The tiger uses low frequency sounds to drive competitors away from its hunting ground and to attract mates.
