What is the law of free fall?

A falling body is an unsupported body that is attracted to the Earth's surface by the force of gravity. Gravity is the force with which the Earth attracts other objects towards itself. In the absence of air resistance, bodies fall in accordance with the law known as the law of free fall, first formulated by the famous Italian scientist Galileo in the sixteenth century.

Galileo conducted many experiments with falling bodies in his laboratory. Based on these experiments, he derived this law: in airless space, the speed of a falling body depends only on the height of the fall and it does not depend on its mass. The longer a body is in free fall, the faster it moves. When a body increases its speed, we say that it has received an acceleration. The acceleration of a freely falling body is 9,8 meters per second. This means that for every second that a body falls, the speed of its fall increases by about ten meters per second.

After the first second, the falling body has a speed of 9,8 meters per second. After the first two seconds, his speed becomes 9,8 plus 9,8 meters, then 19,6 meters per second and so on. Passing through a layer of air, a falling body cannot pick up speed in such a progression. It can only pick up a certain speed. In view of air resistance, there is a limit to the speed of a falling object. This is true even for the heaviest objects. They get accelerated at the beginning of the fall, but at the same time, air resistance also increases. It soon balances the force of gravity. From this moment on, the acceleration of the fall of the body ceases to increase. It reaches its "terminal speed" and does not change until the end of the fall.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is surge flood?

When a strong and prolonged western wind raises the water level in the narrow Gulf of Finland, the Neva turns back and floods St. Petersburg, located on a low coast. This is an example of a surge flood. The two biggest ones happened exactly 100 years apart: in 1824 (remember A. S. Pushkin's poem "The Bronze Horseman") and in 1924. The dam built in the bay saved the city of Petra forever from this disaster.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New Large Can DirectFET MOSFET IRF6718 28.09.2009

International Rectifier has announced a new DirectFET MOSFET IRF6718 with the lowest open channel resistance RDS(on). The new 25V device is optimized for applications such as DC switches such as: Active O Ring (power circuit OR power supply connections), Hot Swap (hot swap without power down or shutdown), E-Fuse (electronic fuse).

A feature of the IRF6718 is the latest-generation silicon package in a new Large Can DirectFET package. This technology achieves an extremely low RDS(on) RDS(on) of 0,5 mΩ (typical at 10 V) and reduces PCB space by 60% and package height by 85% compared to D2PAK.

The new chip packaging technology makes it possible to manufacture DirectFET transistors with a significant reduction in conduction loss, due to the fact that there is no chip welding and no plastic package, the maximum chip area / package area ratio is achieved and the thermal efficiency of the entire system is significantly improved.

The IRF6718 is the first International Rectifier in a Large Can DirectFET package with a significantly reduced RDS(on) value compared to other manufacturers' devices, allowing for superior thermal operating efficiency and high DC/DC density while reducing PCB space. The IRF6718 has an improved Safe Operating Area (SOA) with Hot Swap and E-Fuse capability.
