What is falconry?

The falcon is a bird of prey; that's why she catches other animals for food. It has sharp claws, long wings, and a notch, or "teeth," at the cutting edges of its beak. The family of falcons includes many species, different in size - from a fifteen-centimeter shrike to a sixty-centimeter gyrfalcon.

Falconry is the art of training and hunting with birds of prey, usually falcons or hawks. The bird must be strong and fast enough to take down prey, and smart enough to be trained. When a falcon hunts with its master, it rises high into the air. Some falcons rise to a height of up to 300 meters. When the prey is seen, the falcon rushes at it and grabs it by the back with its claws. Then he lands with prey, twists her neck and begins to pluck. The falconer must approach the falcon with a piece of meat and beckon to him to sit on his hand and get food.

No one knows exactly when falconry began, but we certainly know that it was a very, very long time ago. According to ancient Japanese written sources, the Chinese trained falcons over four thousand years ago. Probably, falconry became known in Europe at the beginning of the Christian era. One of the greatest books on falconry was written in the XNUMXth century by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. He learned most of the information in the East, where he went with the crusades. There, the khans and their heirs were fond of falconry.

For four hundred years, from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century, falconry was very popular in England. There were many curious customs and laws associated with it. For example, the kind of bird with which the falconer hunted depended on his social position. Kings and emperors could use an eagle or a gyrfalcon. Princes, earls and dukes - a roaming falcon and so on. Falconry almost disappeared by the beginning of the XNUMXth century, but there are still people everywhere who continue to practice this sport.

People of what professions used earwax in their work several centuries ago?

Ear wax in former times was widely used in the economy. Medieval scribes extracted pigments from it to illustrate books. Before waxed threads were widely available, seamstresses smeared ear wax on the ends of the threads to keep them from fraying. An 1832 book for American Housewives recommended earwax as the best remedy for alleviating the pain of a stab wound from a nail or skewer.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

A floating city will be built in the Pacific Ocean 30.01.2017

In early 2017, the authorities of French Polynesia signed a memorandum of understanding with the American Seasteading Institute, which plans to build the world's first floating city in the country's controlled part of the Pacific Ocean.

The competition for the best architectural project of the floating city was held in the spring of 2015. The first place in it was taken by "Artisanopolis" (Artisanopolis), developed by the Roark 3D group. Now that a platform for the implementation of a unique project has been found, the institute's experts will have to find out how the emergence of floating communities will affect the economy and ecology of the region. In addition, they plan to develop a special management scheme for such cities, which will require serious legal research. Initially, mobile communities were supposed to drift in international waters.

Aspects of managing the future city in the waters of French Polynesia are to be discussed with the authorities of the region and France, which controls the territory. Creating a community on a platform in the open ocean, away from the coast of French Polynesia, is possible, but not economically viable.

The main advantage of floating cities, according to the scientist, is that their inhabitants will be united by a common voluntary choice: “They will form communities guided by their own interests, instead of living side by side simply because they were born in the same place and because of belonging to one or another nationality.

The agreement between the Seasteading Institute and the government of French Polynesia will be finalized and is expected to turn into a full-fledged bill by the end of the year. If adopted in 2018, the creation of the world's first floating community will begin as early as 2019.
