Did you know?

Has the Earth always been at the same distance from the Sun?

Do you know why it is hot in summer and cold in winter? This is because the position of the earth's axis towards the sun changes as it rotates around the sun. This change is very small, if we take into account the huge distance between these celestial bodies. But this change is enough to make us feel hot in summer and cold in winter.

Can you imagine what life would be like if the distance from the Earth to the Sun changed a lot? If we moved further away, life would become impossible because of the cold. If we got too close, we would burn out from the intense heat. In fact, the distance from the Earth to the Sun is almost the same all the time, and it is about 148 million kilometers. But the orbits of the planets orbiting the Sun are not exactly circular, and so for many other planets, the distance to the Sun varies significantly throughout the year.

For example, Pluto, the farthest from the Sun, has a less circular orbit than the other planets. The distance from Venus to the Sun ranges from 107 to 108 million kilometers. Mars takes 687 days to orbit the sun. During this journey, the distance to the Sun changes, but on average it is about 226 kilometers. Jupiter, the third planet from the Sun after Earth and Mars, is an example of a planet whose distance from the Sun varies greatly.

So, we see that when discussing the distance from the planet to the Sun, the average value is taken. The reason for the oscillations is the mutual attraction of the planets of the solar system.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is the main benefit of bees?

The main contribution of bees to providing people with food is not the honey they produce.

With all the indisputability of its benefits and healing properties, the activity of bees in pollinating plants is much more significant. Without the help of these pollinating insects, neither the clover, nor the cucumber, nor the apple tree, nor the cherry, nor the buckwheat, nor the sunflower would simply be able to realize their biological potential.

Thanks to pollination, the yield of crops doubles and even triples. The resulting profit exceeds, according to experts, the income from direct beekeeping products by dozens of times. Berries also ripen twice as much in those forests where there are apiaries, which accordingly increases the number of forest game.

This was well understood by the Russian Empress Catherine II, who abolished all taxes for beekeepers. Nowadays, in many countries, in particular in Germany and the USA, there are beekeeping support programs as one of the most effective ways to increase plant yields.

For example, a manager of one of the American commercial companies, who delivers beehives to farms in his spare time, receives 39 thousand dollars a year from the federal authorities.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Obesity Vaccine 07.11.2005

The Swiss pharmaceutical company Cytos is developing an anti-obesity vaccine. More precisely, it is a vaccine against hunger.

The feeling of hunger is caused by the hormone ghrelin, which is produced by the cells of an empty stomach. The vaccine, developed by Swiss scientists, causes the immune system to produce antibodies against ghrelin. Antibodies bind the hunger hormone, and the person's appetite decreases. Inoculated mice gained weight 15% more slowly than controls.

Clinical trials are being prepared on people who want to lose weight in a new way - there were more than a hundred such volunteers. Other approaches to the problem are also proposed.

So, British researchers, instead of suppressing the hunger hormone, are experimenting with the satiety hormone - oxinto-modulin. This compound is produced when a person is full and reduces appetite. By introducing a synthetic satiety hormone from the outside, it will be possible to reduce food intake.
