What do our names mean?

The main purpose of the name is, of course, the difference between its bearer and other people. Since the beginning of human history, children have been given names for this at birth or shortly after birth. But when in ancient times parents gave names to their children, they wanted these names to stand for something.

For example, the name could contain some external sign of the child or be an affectionate nickname. Christian names usually have their origin in ancient languages. For example, the name Benjamin (Benjamin) came from the Hebrew language, Andrew (Andrey) - from the Greek, the name Alfred is of Anglo-Saxon origin.

Initially, all names had some meaning. A girl born in a time of famine could be called Una (a Celtic word meaning "hunger"). A girl with golden hair could have received the name Flavia (Latin for "yellow") or Blanche (French for "white"). There are some examples of names that mean something: David (beloved), Susan (lily), Deborah (bee) and Margaret (pearl).

In England and the United States of America, parents can give their child any name they choose. But in France and Germany, the name must be chosen from an official list. When translated from one language to another, the name often undergoes interesting changes. For example, Henry is a Teutonic name meaning "head of the house". It becomes Harry, Gal (English), Henri (French), Heinrich (German), Enrico (Italian), and Hendrik (Danish).

Surnames became widespread about 900 years ago. They were added to the name, because sometimes it was difficult to distinguish people by the name alone. Surnames were formed in various ways: by the name of the father, by the name of the city, by occupation or profession, etc.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did the police stop looking for a killer suspected of 40 crimes since 1993?

Since 1993, 40 crimes have been committed in Germany, Austria and France, including 6 murders, after which samples of one woman's DNA were found at the crime scene or on the body of the victim. The alleged killer became known as the "Phantom of Heilbronn". The police could not find any leads, and the crimes had nothing in common - completely different victims, places, accomplices. It was only in 2009 that it was established that there really was no connection between all these cases. It turned out that DNA samples were taken with cotton swabs, which were initially contaminated with the DNA of their packer in an Austrian factory.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Electric car Nio ET5 29.12.2021

The Nio ET5 electric car, the younger brother of the previously introduced ET7 model, debuted in China. While the ET7 is positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Model S, the ET5 will compete with the Tesla Model 3.

The ET5 power plant includes two electric motors: the power of the one installed on the front axle is 204,5 hp, on the rear axle - 285,5 hp. In total - 490 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4,3 seconds.

The power reserve of the basic version with a traction battery with a capacity of 75 kWh is 700 km, the top version with a battery with a capacity of 100 kWh is 1000 km.

Externally, ET5 is similar to ET7. An electric car looks like a liftback, but the resemblance is purely visual: in reality, this is a sedan. The dimensions of the car are 4790 x 1960 x1499 mm, the wheelbase is 2888. So it should be quite spacious inside.

The interior, like the Tesla, is made in the spirit of minimalism, with two screens in front: one in the instrument cluster, the other as part of the multimedia entertainment system. The speaker system delivers 7.1.4 sound, has 23 speakers and supports Dolby Atmos technology. The developers promised support for 19 functions and technologies for driving assistance.

Prices have already been announced. The base version of the Nio ET5 is priced at $51 and the top version is $450, excluding local subsidies. Deliveries of the first commodity Nio ET60 are scheduled for September next year.
