Are rats pests?

In the entire history of mankind, there was no such animal that people would not fight everywhere with greater fury and zeal than with rats! And while most rat species are completely harmless and interesting animals, the two most common varieties of rats - brown and black - have managed to create a disgusting reputation for the entire family. So why do people fight rats?

The fact is that every year these animals destroy millions of tons of valuable grain, eat eggs, domestic and songbirds, spoil food in houses and on ships. A lot of fires happened due to rats gnawed wicks, gas pipes, electrical wiring insulation, and water pipes damaged by rats caused flooding in houses. In addition, rats spoil floors and furniture, and, finally, they spread diseases, including, fortunately, bubonic plague, which is rare in our time.

The number of rats in the cities, apparently, is not inferior to the number of people, and in the villages there are actually 3-4 rats for each person! They can climb walls and burrow into the ground, live indoors and outdoors, in dry and wet places. While generally preferring vegetables, rats will eat everything. And since these animals can live anywhere and reproduce very quickly, they are very difficult to control. A female rat can give birth to up to 10 cubs a year, and those, in turn, are ready to bring their own offspring after 4 months!

The homeland of black rats is the peninsula of Asia Minor and some countries of the East. These rats came to Europe with the crusaders returning from Palestine. Brown rats originally lived in the barren steppes of Central Asia and probably began their mass migration shortly before the time of the Roman Empire. Like black rats, they have found their way to all parts of the world in the holds of ships and have shown themselves to be one of the most adaptable animals. Just like mice - another rodent that lives with people - rats have become very popular pets and are specially bred for this purpose. Of course, ordinary wild rats are never used for breeding domestic rats, although they are relatives to each other in color and some habits.

White rats are actually albinos of brown rats. An albino is an animal that has impaired pigmentation of the skin and coat. Such individuals are rare, but humans specifically breed albinos because of their color. Pet rats are best kept in cages, but the living space should be large. It is recommended to make cells with a slope leading to the second "floor". And, of course, it is better to use iron cages, because the wooden bars can be gnawed when the rats get bored with this dwelling.

Domestic rats are very unpretentious, and the best food for them is ground or crushed oatmeal mixed with bird food. The lifespan of domestic rats is two to three years.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

LED SOLERIQ S 13 OSRAM Opto Semiconductors 27.08.2013

The Soleriq high power LED family from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has been expanded with a new product: the Soleriq S 13 is a high-brightness LED with a light emitting surface diameter of 13,5 mm and is available in all color temperatures. The new LED is used in lighting systems that meet the highest requirements for lighting quality. Soleriq S 13 replaces high power halogen lamps in LED luminaires and room lighting in hotels, restaurants and shops.

Soleriq S 13 creates an exceptional opportunity for building lighting systems, especially in the professional sector of lighting systems, thanks to its brightness of 1500 lm and a light emitting surface with a diameter of 13,5 mm. They are installed in LED fixtures or lamps instead of high power halogen lamps. "Soleriq S 13 is designed for both professional and home lighting applications because it covers all color temperatures along with high brightness. In addition, the color rendering index of this LED for all color temperatures exceeds 80. As a result, Soleriq S 13 greatly expands the scope of the Soleriq LED family, since the previously introduced E 30 and E 45 diodes of this family were only for ceiling luminaires," explains Andreas Vogler, Marketing Manager of the General Lighting Systems Department, who is responsible at Osram Opto Semiconductors for the Soleriq LED family.

Like the E 30 and E 45 LEDs, the Soleriq S 13 greatly simplifies the design of the luminaire, since due to its exceptional brightness, only one component, instead of several, needs to be installed in the luminaire. The crystals in the diode are very densely packed and they are all under a common phosphor layer (chip-on-board), which creates the impression of a uniform light-emitting surface, and also provides a uniform color and uniform light distribution. In order to further improve the uniformity of light, the crystals are arranged in a circle. This greatly simplifies the matching of LEDs with secondary optics. The light generated in such a device can be used with much lower optical losses, which, in turn, increases the efficiency of LED lamps and fixtures. The typical advantages of LED light sources, such as high energy efficiency, long service life and low operating costs, also apply to ceiling luminaires using Soleriq S 13.

The new powerful light sources are quite easy to work with. Unlike other commercially available high power LEDs, Soleriq S 13 does not require soldering to mount; You can mount these LEDs with glue, screws or a connector. Of course, ordinary soldering can also be used to connect the wires, followed by mounting with glue or screw fastening on a radiator. However, a much simpler way is to use a connector that provides both electrical contact and mechanical fastening of the LED. This eliminates the need for soldering; you just need to insert the connecting wires into the spring contacts of the connector.
