Ultra-slim camera without optical lenses

12.07.2017

Traditional cameras, even the smallest ones that are installed in mobile phones, cannot be very thin due to the presence of an optical system in them, lenses that must have a strictly defined shape and size. But researchers at the California Institute of Technology have developed a fundamentally new type of camera that replaces the lenses with an optical phased array (OPA). And this grating performs the same role as the large optical components, it allows you to control the light that hits the sensor so that the sensors can form a complete image.

Lenses with a certain radius of curvature refract the light entering them and allow it to be focused on the surface of the sensor. An optical phase grating consists of a set of photodetectors, each of which operates with a strictly defined delay, which makes it possible to detect light with a given phase value. This, in turn, allows the flat camera to "look" in different directions and focus on different objects.

The high speed of the phase grating allows the camera to consistently focus on small parts of the future image. At the same time, the change in the direction of the "look" of the camera is carried out very quickly, for periods of time calculated in femtoseconds.

Phase gratings have been used for a long time in radio communications and radar technologies. These arrays consist of many transmitter elements emitting the same signal with a slightly different phase. The electromagnetic waves of these signals interact with each other, which leads to the fact that only a signal that propagates only in a certain direction is amplified. And such a grating is capable of emitting a focused beam of electromagnetic waves, the direction of which can be controlled with sufficiently high accuracy without the need for moving mechanical components.

The optical phase grating consists of 64 photosensitive elements and is a thin layer of silicon on which all the necessary photonic elements are created. This component performs two functions at once, the function of a lens and the function of a light sensor, which, in theory, should significantly reduce the cost of future digital cameras. In addition, the digital control of the optical grille allows you to switch it to several modes, in the mode of a conventional lens, in a wide-angle lens, the so-called "fisheye", and in a telephoto lens mode.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

SONY ELECTRONICS pays for past mistakes 24.04.2003

Sony Electronics has announced its readiness to fix free of charge the shortcomings found by the owners of the Cyber-shot DSC-P1 digital camera, which ceased sales in September 2001.

It turned out that the dust settling on the charger connectors and their oxidation lead to the fact that the camera batteries do not charge properly and their life is far from what buyers expected when purchasing Sony products. The defect appears only after prolonged use of the charger, which is also an external power source for the camera in stationary conditions.

Sony Electronics announced its readiness to replace the ill-fated blocks, and at the same time the batteries damaged by them, without taking a cent from the frustrated owners of the digital miracle. How much the promise will cost the company itself is not said out loud, but it is known that in total about 500 Cyber-shot DSC-P1 digital cameras were sold. True, as the representatives of the company assure, the defect, most likely, was found only in a small part of the products.
