Where does the stoat have such white fur?

Ermine fur is considered royal and for good reason. In the old days in England, only members of the royal family were allowed to wear this fur. Later this honor was awarded to peers and government officials. Their rank could be judged by the number of black ermine tails.

The white stoat is the winter coat of some stoat species. Only stoats that live in cold lands become white for the winter: Canada, Lapland and Siberia.

Ermines living in temperate climates have summer fur, with a reddish tint on the back and light yellow on the belly, in winter it almost does not change in color. Weasels are closely related to weasels, minks and martens. All these animals have elongated slender bodies, with a long neck and short legs with sharp claws. Male weasels reach a length of 40 cm, females - 33 cm. The length of the tail of long-tailed weasels can reach 10 cm.

Short-tailed weasels have about 5 cm shorter tails. The smallest weasels, which are called "tiniest", are found in Alaska and northern Canada. The largest species of weasel are found in the southern United States and do not change their color throughout the year.

Generally speaking, weasel can be considered a friend of man. They constantly hunt, exterminating parasites: rats, mice, rabbits and some birds. But many farmers can tell you what kind of enemy weasels are when robbing chicken coops. One weasel can kill up to 40 chickens per night!

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What kind of people can perceive ultraviolet radiation and in what form?

If a person is missing the lens of the eye as a result of surgery, trauma, or a congenital anomaly, they are able to perceive ultraviolet light as a whitish-blue or whitish-purple color. However, this is not the same as true tetrachromatism, which many birds, fish, and insects possess. With such vision, in addition to the three ordinary cones, there is a fourth in the eye, which perceives just the ultraviolet spectrum, due to which the number of distinguishable shades of colors is much higher.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Transforming Drone from Samsung 21.12.2018

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has registered a patent application for South Korean company Samsung, which decided to suddenly enter the drone market. Recently, the Koreans have already filed four patents for various drones, and the fifth was a patent for a transforming drone.

Formally, the drone will belong to the line of accessories for the next generation of Galaxy smartphones. The quadcopter will receive a set of cameras, ultrasonic sensors, temperature, light and ultraviolet sensors, a gyroscope, a compass and a barometer.

The transformation lies in the fact that the propeller blades can be folded and retracted into the body. Moreover, the body is made of two parts, which can move apart like a matchbox.

It will be possible to control the drone not only from a smartphone and tablet, but also from a washing machine or refrigerator.
