What is platinum?

Platinum is a metal with unique properties. Its name comes from the Spanish word "plata" meaning "little silver" and is given to it because of its greyish-white coloration. Platinum is almost as malleable as gold. A piece of this metal weighing 30 grams can be drawn into a thin wire so long that it would stretch across half of Europe from the city of Cologne in Germany to Moscow.

Platinum is twice as heavy as lead, and a cube of 30 cm in length, width and height would weigh more than 500 kg. In nature, platinum is found in ores along with other rare metals: ruthenium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and osmium. These elements are called platinum metals. Sometimes it is found in the earth along with gold, silver, copper, iron, chromium and nickel. It is found in the form of small grains, inclusions or nuggets.

For the first time, large deposits of platinum were found in South America in the XNUMXth century. For a long time, this metal did not find much use and therefore was not highly valued. However, later, when people learned to use its unique properties, its price began to rise sharply. In addition, the content of platinum in the earth's crust is so low that the cost of the cube, which we spoke about, exceeds two million dollars on the world market.

Of particular value is the resistance of platinum to oxidizing agents (eg oxygen), acids and heat. Platinum melts at 1843°C and dissolves only in a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids. As a rule, it is used in the form of alloys with platinum metals, silver, gold, copper, nickel or tin.

The main area of application of platinum is the jewelry industry, but it is also used for the manufacture of contacts in electrical circuits, analytical balances and other equipment in scientific laboratories, in instruments for accurate temperature measurement, etc.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Purification of drinking water from drugs 23.11.2021

Researchers at the University of Johannesburg have developed a method for monitoring wastewater. It helps detect antiretroviral drugs that are prescribed for HIV and AIDS.

Wastewater treatment plants cannot remove pharmaceuticals that enter rivers from wastewater. Often people flush the tablets down the toilet, in addition, they enter the wastewater with urine or feces (a certain amount of the drug is not absorbed, but excreted by the body).

A new study has found a simple and fast way to detect antiretroviral drugs. The method involves the production of an environmentally friendly adsorbent, which takes about two days. A modified composite with activated carbon alginate is used as a sorbent. The porous structure, large surface area and many functional groups make the adsorbent suitable for efficient adsorption of target analytes.

Water samples are pre-concentrated before analysis. Water samples are taken from the river upstream and downstream of the wastewater treatment plant, which is the most efficient method.

It is expected that such a purification method will allow the removal of toxic microimpurities in drinking water.
