What is gypsum?

The use of gypsum by people is growing at such a rate that in recent years its production in the world has doubled. Due to the fact that gypsum perfectly resists fire and water, besides, it poorly transmits cold and heat, it is used in large quantities in construction for wall cladding. By the way, gypsum blocks and bricks can be sawn and nailed like wooden planks.

A mixture of gypsum with a small amount of cement and some other components forms a lightweight building material called stucco. It is widely used in the construction of modern buildings. What is gypsum? Gypsum is a mineral that is calcium sulfate mixed with water.

There is a translucent variety of gypsum called selenite, and another of a special luster known as alabaster. Gypsum is extracted from thick layers that lie underground at various depths: some near the surface, others much deeper. In the US state of Texas, layers of gypsum more than 100 meters thick were found, covering an area of hundreds of square kilometers. Gypsum has been used as a building material and for plastering walls and ceilings since ancient Egypt.

Used alone or mixed with sand or lime, gypsum is transformed into moldings, wall tiles or finishing plaster. It can be used to make bricks or even whole blocks for walls. Gypsum is used to create scenery for films and performances; sculptors, surgeons and dentists use it in their work. Gypsum is a cheap raw material, and its reserves are found almost everywhere in the world.

What did the goat gesture mean before the era of rock and metal?

The goat gesture has existed for a long time as a magical sign against evil spirits. The main popularizer of this gesture among rockers and metalheads is Ronnie James Dio, the lead singer of Rainbow and Black Sabbath, who systematically showed it during concerts. According to Dio, his Italian grandmother often folded her fingers into a goat to ward off the evil eye. However, even before Dio, many musicians showed this gesture - for example, there are many photos where John Lennon does it.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The Danger of Dirty Windows 04.11.2022

Scientists from the University of Birmingham called for washing dirty windows. They argue that windows can contain toxic contaminants and hide potentially harmful contaminants behind a film of fatty acids from food preparations that can be stored for long periods of time.

Fatty acids present in cooking emissions are very stable and difficult to break down in the atmosphere. And when they hit a hard surface like a window, they create a thin, self-organizing and slowly accumulating film, and can only be gradually broken down by other chemicals in the atmosphere.

Thus, the film will become rougher and draw out more water due to air humidity. In addition, harmful contaminants can enter the resilient crust, where they are then protected from degradation in the atmosphere.

The fatty acids in these films are not particularly harmful on their own, but because they are not broken down, they effectively protect any other contaminants that might be trapped underneath.

During the study, the team worked on lab proxy material samples designed in the lab to get closer to real world samples. They were twisted into ultrathin films of pollution only a few tens of nanometers thick.

The researchers used both neutrons and X-rays to study the nanoscale composition of the films and changes in surface structures. They changed the humidity and the amount of ozone, a key indoor and outdoor pollutant.

As a result, it was found that the self-organized arrangement within the films in the form of repeating molecular layers - the so-called lamellar phase - makes it difficult for smaller molecules, such as ozone, to access the reactive parts of fatty acids within these structures.
